Do you leave your mobile phone and computer only for sleep? We, too. Therefore, they were puzzled by the question of whether the blue light of the monitor harms the skin. And if so, what kind of influence does it have and whether it is possible to protect yourself from it. Here’s what we found out.
What is blue light and why is it harmful?
The blue light emitted by computer monitors and smartphone screens (as well as LCD TV screens and energy-saving lamps) is denoted in English by the letters HEV. This abbreviation stands for High-Energy Visible Light — high-frequency light of the visible spectrum in the range of 400–500 nm.
Recently, statements accusing HEV radiation of premature skin aging have been heard more and more loudly:
the formation of wrinkles;
hyperpigmentation;
destruction of collagen.
They say that it is almost more harmful than ultraviolet. And cosmetics developers and skin care professionals have coined the term “digital aging.”
The life of a modern person is “illuminated” by blue HEV radiation
Vichy medical expert Elena Eliseeva is convinced that today there is not a single convincing evidence that the blue light of digital devices has a destructive effect on the skin, although they tried very hard to get compromising information.
The number of people who took part in the testing and the duration of the studies are too small to draw an accurate conclusion. In other words, the sample is not valid.
The companies that filed charges against computers and mobile phones just specialize in the production of HEV filters. That is, they are financially interested in making us afraid of screens.
The only fair claim put forward by the cold light of the screen is its ability to block the synthesis of the sleep hormone melatonin, thereby disrupting the body’s biorhythms. That is, a person who spends around the clock at the monitor, as a result, sleeps poorly or little. A lack of sleep negatively affects the quality of the skin.
Cosmetics against HEV radiation
While the digital skin aging debate is ongoing, some cosmetic companies have already released cosmetics that “block out” the blue light of gadgets.
In fact, almost all HEV filters are antioxidant complexes, useful, but by no means exclusive, ”comments Elena Eliseeva.
Therefore, use any antioxidant means. For example, serum with vitamin C. And do not forget to reduce the brightness of the screen.
Serums with high concentration of vitamin C
Antioxidant youth concentrate LiftActiv, Vichy — a cocktail of antioxidants led by vitamin C (15%) protects the skin from the effects of stress and free radicals. Corrects wrinkles, serves as a prevention of early aging.
