How to properly organize lighting in an apartment, designer’s advice

When you go outside and take a quick glance in the mirror, the right light decides whether you will be happy with your image and with what mood you will continue the day. Lighting is an important decor element. The main task of any home is to immerse the owners in an atmosphere of peace and comfort, so that a person feels happy. The mood and attitude with which you leave the apartment every day depend on the design and lighting of the house.

When you’re relaxing in your bedroom, the right light can help you relax, and harsh lighting can be depressing. An interesting and expensive design in your apartment will turn into lifeless decorations with the wrong light.

The types of lighting are designed to create a different atmosphere and mood, to place the necessary accents in accordance with the purpose of the room.

If you want to achieve a feeling of a weightless atmosphere at home, then choose reflected light. This is one of the most comfortable types of lighting used in exhibitions and theaters. This type of lighting will draw all attention to you, to the most important exhibit. You can achieve a bounced light effect when light from a source bounces off, for example, a white ceiling. Ceiling lamps located along the perimeter of the ceiling and floor lamps that direct light to the ceiling do this task well. There are also special lamps for reflected light.

Reflected light binds all the elements of the interior together. It works well for highlighting walls and space perimeters. And, very importantly, all skin irregularities become less pronounced in such a soft light.

Even better for photographs, diffused light is suitable, which involves uniform illumination of all surfaces. There are no shadows and highlights. This effect can be achieved using translucent shades and lampshades. To liven up the space, it is better to use a mixed lighting option, when spotlights are directed to certain areas – a table, a headboard.

It is important that the light does not distort facial features or cast strong shadows. Otherwise, you risk seeing a gloomy and unfriendly face in the mirror that has aged ahead of time. The most dangerous light is sharp and bright, directed strictly from above or below. It will emphasize all even the lightest wrinkles, the slightest unevenness of the skin.

Theatricality and even drama are given by back lighting when the light source is behind the back. If a beautiful vase or mirror needs an effective highlighting of the relief, then backlighting is what you need. And if at home you illuminate your face or figure in this way, it will be very uncomfortable. Or even depressing.

Don’t limit yourself! The unusual shade of light greatly transforms even the simplest interior. For example, soft warm shades will be appropriate in the bedroom. But first of all, start from your taste: someone feels comfortable in a red or green bedroom, someone can relax only in a room with white walls with blue lighting.

In our work, we often turn to neon. It adds an intimate magical atmosphere to the space. With its help, we create optical illusions, play with shadows, and highlight accents. In an apartment, for a start, you can play with neon lighting when decorating a party. In hardware stores, you can easily find a huge variety of LED lamps, light filters and simply shades with colored lamps. Daredevils can use neon in the bedroom as well. For example, run an LED strip around the perimeter of the ceiling or your bed. A mesmerizing effect is guaranteed.
