How to properly glue the windows for the winter

Wooden frames dry out over time. They form cracks through which cold air enters the house. It is possible to cope with this problem with improvised means. In this article, we will show you how to glue windows.

How to glue the windows for the winter?

Craftsmen have developed many ways to insulate windows. Among them are:

  • Paraffin. Melt old paraffin candles in a water bath. Fill the syringe with the resulting liquid. Smoothly pressing down on the piston, fill all the cracks in the frames with paraffin. After the paraffin is completely cured, it will become a reliable protection from the cold wind.
  • Newspapers. Roll the strips of moistened newspaper into tubes. Fill all the cracks in the frames with the prepared flagella. Glue strips of white paper on top. So the insulation will be invisible on the windows.
  • Sealant. Purchase a rubber seal from your hardware store. If the slots in the frames are wide, then give preference to the category “D” seal. Rinse the frames thoroughly from dirt and dry them. Stick the strips of sealant over the crevices.

These simple methods will help prevent cold air from entering your apartment, but in the spring you will have to work hard to restore the windows to their original appearance.

How to seal windows with soap?

You can fill up the cracks in the window frames with the help of scrap materials and soap:

  • Textile. Cut strips 3 cm wide from a thick cloth. Soak them in water and squeeze thoroughly. Lubricate each strip generously with soap. Glue the fabric to the window frame so that it covers the gaps. Thanks to the soap, the fabric strips will keep air out. In the spring, such insulation can be easily removed without damaging the paint.
  • Foam rubber and paper. Fill the gaps in the window frames with thin strips of foam rubber. For these purposes, you can also use cotton wool. Cut white thick paper into strips 4 cm wide.Lubricate each strip with soap and water. Glue the paper over the slots.

Such methods allow you to quickly glue windows without damaging their surface. When it gets warm, rinse the frames with warm water and the insulation will be washed off.

How to properly seal windows: basic mistakes

The use of some materials leads to deterioration of the window surface. These include:

  1. Masking tape. Such material does not withstand temperature changes. After three weeks, it falls off, and pieces of paint fall off with it.
  2. Medical plaster. The adhesive mass penetrates too deeply into the surface of the window, so it can only be torn off with a knife.

Use such materials only if in the spring you plan to install new windows or start restoring old ones.

Choosing a suitable method, you will reliably protect the apartment from the penetration of icy air.
