Do-it-yourself vegetables always seem tastier and healthier. In order to add fresh onions to dishes in winter, it must be properly dried after harvesting. Dry onions do not rot and mold does not form on them. Therefore, it is necessary to remember a few basic rules on how to dry onions after harvesting and how to store them.

In order for the onion to be well stored, it must be harvested in dry weather. Watering should be completely stopped a couple of weeks before harvest. You cannot pull the onion out of the ground. You need to dig it, otherwise you will damage the bottom and the vegetable will start to rot.

After the harvest is harvested, the question arises of how to dry the onions. To do this, you can use the following methods:

  • Leave the onions directly in the beds. This method can be used only if the air temperature is in the range from +20 to +30 degrees and there is no precipitation. In order to prevent dew from settling on vegetables in the early morning, cover them with covering material in the evening. In this way, the onion is completely dried in 10-15 days.
  • Weave onion braids. Take an onion and tie a double-folded rope to it. Then simply braid the onion tails and secure them with a string. The structure obtained by this method must be suspended from the ceiling in a well-ventilated area. It is very easy to separate dried onions from a bunch using scissors.

Completely dried onions should feel firm to the touch. The outer husk should be tight and dry, the neck should close well. Only such a bow can be put away for storage. Before that, clear it of the remnants of the earth. Places of cut feathers are best burned with fire. The length of the neck should not exceed 4 cm.

How to store onions properly?

After you have harvested and dried the crop, you need to put it away for storage. To do this, you can use the following methods:

  • Hanging in nets. Transfer prepared vegetables to special mesh bags and bring them up to the ceiling in a well-ventilated area. If there are no such bags, you can use old nylon tights.
  • Bookmarking in wooden boxes. Prepare a wooden box, the height of which does not exceed 30 cm. Make ventilation holes in it, pour dried vegetables into it. Move the drawer to a cool, dry place.

Remember not to store onions in plastic bags. This material does not allow air to pass through, and condensation begins to form on the vegetables, causing mold.

By observing the rules of drying and storage, you can save your harvest for the whole winter.
