How to properly distribute and store food in the refrigerator

This, of course, saves space. But it has a bad effect on the safety of products.

You know, it’s just stress: after 30 years of conscious life, you transfer eggs from cardboard packaging to cells on the refrigerator door, and then you find out that this is not necessary. And all thanks to a food safety expert from a specialized Australian institute. Michelle Bosewski described the basic rules for how the space in the refrigerator should be organized. And it turned out that we always did some things wrong.

This is the place for ready-to-eat foods and food leftovers. This is important, such products should be stored away from raw ones that require heat treatment. You cannot mix them. The exception is vegetables and fruits, we will talk about them a little later.

Eggs should be stored on the middle shelf. No, not in the compartments on the door! And right in the middle. Michelle Bosewski thinks the door is too warm for them. To keep the eggs fresh longer, you need to provide a cooler place for them.

The lower shelf is a place for raw meat, fish, poultry and minced meat.

“These foods are best stored in closed containers unless they are sealed,” advises Michelle.

According to the expert, this will prevent the possible spread of bacteria that may be on raw meat. Together with dripping juice, they can easily spread throughout the refrigerator and “infect” other foods.

This is the warmest part of the refrigerator. Ideal for milk and dairy products.

“I keep cheeses and yoghurts at the top of the door, spices and sauces in the middle, milk and other drinks at the bottom,” says Michel Bosewski.

If you have two separate drawers, it is best to store vegetables and fruits separately. If not, that’s okay. There is only one fruit that cannot be refrigerated. In any case, next to other fruits.

“It’s apples. They emit ethylene gas, which makes vegetables and fruits spoil faster. But first they ripen to the required condition, so if you have unripe tomatoes or plums, put an apple next to it, ”advises Michelle.

The best way to store apples is in a tightly closed bag. Another life hack is to put an apple with onions.

“This will prevent the onion from sprouting,” the expert explains.

Cover the bottom of the fruit and vegetable compartment with paper towels. They will absorb excess moisture and the fruit will last longer. And so that the bananas do not spoil so quickly, it is enough to wrap the stems with aluminum foil.
