How to properly care for upholstered furniture

In order for your upholstered furniture to please even children (or even grandchildren), it must be properly looked after. We will tell you how.

In fact, the appearance and service life of furniture (any, not necessarily upholstered) depends not only on the materials from which it is made, but also on how correctly you used and… cleaned it. And if you are lucky enough to become the owner of, say, a stylish sofa upholstered in natural fabric, then you probably know how difficult it is to care for it. Together with the experts at Crate and Barrel, we have put together some tips to help you tidy up your sofas, armchairs or ottomans.

There is nothing worse than faded upholstery that can turn even the most stylish sofa into something very unattractive. Therefore, so that the sun’s rays do not affect the state of the fabric, making it dimmer, such furniture must be placed where there is no direct sunlight. Or you will have to completely update the upholstery (unless, of course, there is an opportunity or desire to purchase a new sofa).

Unattractive sofa cushions

Here we are not talking about colors and shapes – this is a matter of taste, as they say. We are referring to warped cushions, whose shabby appearance does not paint your living room at all. This does not mean that it is necessary to use the sofa as rarely as possible for its intended purpose, so that it delights you with its neat appearance for as long as possible. If you want to keep the shape (and appearance) of the cushions for a long time, then it is enough to turn them over or change their places at least once a week.

Dirt and dust in hard to reach places

We are sure that each of us faced this problem at least once. Therefore, it is necessary to pass a vacuum cleaner equipped with special attachments daily over your upholstered furniture so that the accumulation of dust in the upholstery (between the seams and parts) does not lead to an unpleasant smell, allergies and other unpleasant consequences.

Frequently, an independent struggle with stains leads to the fact that unattractive stains appear on the upholstery, which are then very difficult to deal with. If, say, you spill some liquid on the sofa, then you should not rub the stain with special zeal – this way the dirt will only be absorbed even deeper into the fabric, and then you will have to completely change the upholstery or buy a cover / blanket for the sofa. Spilled liquid should be gently blotted with a soft cloth (from the edges to the middle) and, if necessary, a professional service should be invited.

Everyone knows that newspapers or jeans, if they are made of low-quality material, can leave marks on the upholstery and spoil the presentation of upholstered furniture. Especially if you have a light sofa, and capes or blankets are not provided. There is only one advice in this case. Try not to leave such products on the furniture, and then you can not worry about the possible loss of color or the appearance of dark spots on the upholstery of light colors.

Once a year, it is necessary to carry out a general cleaning of upholstered furniture (regardless of how clean it looks)
