How should I prepare for an abdominal ultrasound examination? Should I take medications to get rid of gas before the ultrasound? Does it require special preparation? Should the bladder be full or should it be emptied? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.
How should I prepare for an abdominal ultrasound examination?
Good morning, my dad complained of stomachaches with nausea, diarrhea and a bloated stomach for no particular reason. We went to the doctor in this case, who gave a referral for an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, saying that before he makes a diagnosis, such a test is necessary for my father. However, I would like to know how to prepare for an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity? I know the pre-test diet should be easy to digest, but nothing else.
Should dad take any medications prior to the gas test or something similar? Is there any special preparation for abdominal ultrasound? The doctor seems to have given my dad the guidelines and even wrote them down on a piece of paper, but my dad lost it. Therefore, I prefer to make sure that it does not turn out to be successful for the examination, and due to poor preparation, it cannot be performed. I am still wondering whether I should drink a lot of fluids before an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, should the bladder be full or should it be empty? Thank you for your help.
Your doctor advises you on how to prepare for an ultrasound examination of the abdominal cavity
Ladies and Gentlemen, in the case of ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, proper preparation is very important, because residual gases or digestive content may prevent the correct assessment of internal organs. You must not eat any food at least six hours before the test. It is allowed to drink water in small portions if necessary. If the patient is taking medications on a permanent basis, he or she can take them on the day of the examination, but no later than one hour before the visit. It is rarely mentioned, but smoking or chewing gum is also forbidden.
Two days before the examination, an easily digestible, non-smoking diet should be introduced, and on the day preceding the examination, it is recommended to use Espumisan in a dose of 3 × 3 capsules (if there are no contraindications to the use of the drug). The methods that I have mentioned are sufficient to properly prepare for the test. As for the urinary bladder, the necessity to fill it depends on the indications for the examination. Personally, I think it is better to come with a full bladder, the only time the doctor will ask you to use the toilet.
