A telemedical visit is an alternative to a traditional visit to a doctor’s office. The possibility of consulting a specialist in the form of a phone call, chat or videoconference often allows you to solve the patient’s problem without leaving home. Using this type of service is not complicated, but it is worth knowing how to prepare for a TV visit.

What is a telemedicine visit?

A telemedical visit allows you to take advantage of a medical consultation without leaving your home. Most medical facilities offer patients several forms of contact. One of the options is traditional call, during which you can present your health problem, receive an e-prescription or e-certificate. The second possibility is chat with the doctor via the text messenger on the site of the facility, and the third is videoconferenceor talking to a doctor face-to-face thanks to a webcam.

The main advantages of a telemedicine visit are a short waiting time for a consultation, the ability to connect with a doctor from anywhere, no need to stand in lines, so convenience and time saving. Patients should remember that they should also be properly prepared for a medical visit in order to facilitate the doctor’s accurate assessment of the situation and obtain answers to bothering questions.

Preparation for a telemedicine visit – technical issues

A remote medical consultation does not take place in the office, so we should make sure that nothing distracts us during its duration. There are also purely technical issues that determine the quality of the connection and how smoothly the conversation will go. Before a telemedicine visit, you should:

  1. make sure that at the agreed time on the day of the visit we will be able to freely contact the doctor in a secluded place;
  2. prepare the device necessary to conduct the conversation in the selected form – a working telephone, and in the case of an online call, a computer with Internet access; if there is a videoconference planned, we should make sure we have access to a working microphone and camera;
  3. to prepare data necessary to identify the patient, e.g. PESEL number or code needed to authorize the connection;
  4. take into account other recommendations that are provided to patients by specific medical institutions.

Preparation for a telemedicine visit – what will be useful in practice?

Although the use of a telemedicine visit does not require leaving home, the patient should prepare for it in the same way as for a stationary visit. Before a telemedicine visit there are a few things to consider during the interview that may be important for you and your doctor:

  1. a list of things you want to talk to your doctor about – worrying symptoms, ailments, e-prescriptions you need, or other questions;
  2. medications you are taking – tell your doctor about any medications you are taking on a permanent basis or have recently used over-the-counter medications;
  3. medical documentation from a previous visit or related to ailments bothering the patient – if we want to consult a doctor on the test results, we should familiarize ourselves with the options available in a given facility for sending documentation to the doctor.

The course of a telemedicine visit

The course of each telemedicine consultation may be slightly different, depending on the problem with which the patient reports. If we are treated chronically like diabetes, it is best to make an appointment with a doctor who knows the history of the disease or prepare the necessary information about the treatment and tests performed so far. In the case of ailments that may be the result of an infection (e.g. fever), it is worth taking the body temperature before the visit and preparing a list of symptoms.
