Conifers differ in size, growth rate, crown shape and needle color. Height. The optimum plant height for giving is no more than 10 meters. Therefore, the following are perfect: thuja western “Columna”, prickly spruce “Koster”, fir “Korean”. They can be planted along the fence as a hedge. Low-growing conifers (up to 1 meter) are ideal for compositions: Canadian spruce “Alberta Globa”, western thuja “Yellow Ribbon”. Creeping plants (cossack junipers “Variegata”, horizontal “Glauka”) and spherical (western thuja “Danica”, “Teddy”) look original. Crown shape. It is better to select trees with a pyramidal or spherical crown shape. Thuja, junipers and yews can be trimmed regularly. Needle color. Shades of needles can be from golden (junipers “Gold Coast”, “Old Gold”, Canadian yew “Aurea”) to blue (spruce barbed blue “Bonfire”, juniper scaly “Mary”).
How not to make a mistake when buying seedlings?
Make surethat the plant is capable of overwintering in central Russia – sometimes conifers are sold in stores, suitable for growing only in winter gardens. Get conifers with a closed root system, that is, growing in a container. Tug lightly on the branches – the plant should not be removed from the pot.
1… Choose a location. Conifers grow well on acidic peat soils with the addition of sand. If the soil is clay, moisture will accumulate at the roots and they will rot. Plants of green color can withstand both shade and partial shade. But those that have a certain shade (bluish, grayish, golden) love the sun. Ephedra tolerate slight drought. Excess water is more dangerous for them – the roots remain without oxygen and die off. Therefore, do not plant plants in areas where water stagnates. 2. Prepare the pit. Fill it with well-rotted manure or compost with sand and add 50 g of complex mineral fertilizer for conifers (sold in the store). Rotten needles will be good food (a third of a bucket of thorns is needed for a seedling in a three-liter container). 3. Do not bury the root collar when landing… Pour abundantly over the diameter of the hole and cover with earth and needles. Conifers take root in 1-1,5 months. At this time, it is better to shade them from the sun and water them 2-3 times a week before the onset of frost.
You need to feed the seedlings carefully. It is better to underfeed conifers than overfeed. Fresh manure must not be applied, and mineral fertilizers must be with a minimum nitrogen content. For the winter, wrap the branches of coniferous plants loosely with burlap and tie them with a rope. This will protect the branches from freezing and sunburn, and spherical and columnar trees from losing their shape.
