How to plant Jerusalem artichoke correctly in autumn
Jerusalem artichoke is loved by many for its beneficial properties. Someone uses it as an analogue of potatoes that does not contain starch, someone just enjoys the taste. Having figured out how to plant Jerusalem artichoke, in the fall you will harvest nutritious root crops rich in vitamins and minerals.
It is believed that it is advisable to plant an earthen pear in the spring. But this is only relevant for the southern regions that do not suffer from spring frosts. It is better for everyone else to plant in September, when it is still warm: the tubers will have time to germinate and safely endure the winter, but early frosts in the spring will prevent root crops from forming and destroy the plantings.
Autumn for planting is also good in that Jerusalem artichoke needs a minimum of watering, just before planting you need good moisture.
Underground rodents prepare for hibernation and will not harm the tubers. There remains only one problem – still active insects that spread diseases.
Do not be afraid that the winter cold will badly affect the taste of an earthen pear: the tubers can withstand up to thirty degrees of frost. The main thing is to choose the time for planting so that shoots do not appear before the first frost.
How to plant Jerusalem artichoke in the fall
The basic rule of a good planting is enhanced soil fertilization. And it must be carried out in advance, preferably a year before laying the tubers in the ground. So, to plant Jerusalem artichoke, you need:
- dig up the ground in the fall, the thickness of the layer – into the bayonet of a shovel. Put compost or humus in it, 10 g per 1 sq. m. Then add fertilizers containing potassium and phosphorus, 30 and 40 g, respectively. In the spring, loosen the soil again by about 20 cm and add nitrogen-containing fertilizer, 15-20 g per 1 sq. m;
- next fall, you can start planting tubers. For this purpose, they must be small in size and well-defined and round. Damaged Jerusalem artichoke is soaked in potassium permanganate before planting, whole – in a growth accelerator;
- dig holes no more than 18 cm deep, place them at a distance of half a meter from each other, the width between the rows should be about 60 cm;
- the tubers are carefully placed in the holes and covered with earth.
That’s all. After about 120 days, the roots will ripen and can be dug out.
