To get a good harvest, you need to know how to plant garlic correctly.
Garlic has 2 main varieties:
- Spring. This variety of garlic is planted in spring, as soon as stable warm weather is established outside – this is the end of March or the beginning of April. Harvested in late August or early September. The advantage of the view is the storage duration. The disadvantages are small teeth and a less rich yield compared to the winter variety.
- Winter. This type of garlic must be planted in the fall, 3-4 weeks before the first frost. The most optimal time is the first half of October. The crop is harvested in mid-July or early August. This variety has a good harvest, with larger and stronger teeth. The main disadvantage is a shorter storage period than that of spring.
Despite the fact that winter garlic is less well stored, it is more popular among gardeners than spring garlic. To harvest all year round, some gardeners plant both species.
How to plant garlic correctly?
To plant any kind of garlic, it is important to thoroughly fertilize the soil. It is best to do this in advance. For spring garlic, you need to fertilize in the fall, for winter garlic – in the spring. If it did not work out to make such an early feeding, it should be done 3 weeks before the intended planting. Humus can be used as fertilizer, at the rate of one bucket per square meter. With increased acidity of the soil, ash is added to reduce it.
Fresh manure must not be used as fertilizer for garlic!
The place for the garden must be sunny. Garlic can be planted after cabbage, strawberries, or the legume family. Will grow worse after onions, potatoes and tomatoes.
For sowing garlic, you need to select the largest teeth, without signs of disease. If there are several rows in the head, then the teeth are taken from the first row. The seeds are soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate or salt for 2 hours.
The soil in the garden must be dug up, loosened, leveled and divided into grooves. The distance between the grooves is 15-20 cm. The seeds are inserted into the ground to a depth equal to two teeth. A distance of 10-12 cm is maintained between the plants.
If garlic is planted before winter, then when the first frost appears, you need to cover the bed with fallen leaves or sawdust.
