How to plant flowers: for seedlings and in the ground. Video
Annual and perennial flowers can be planted as seeds in the ground and for seedlings. Each of the methods is used depending on the plant, the requirements for its cultivation, and climatic conditions.
How to grow annual flowers
Annual flowers brighten and liven up the garden wonderfully. They are used to form flower beds, as well as in mixed plantings with perennial plants. Annuals are grown from seeds both in open and protected ground. Flowers are sown in open ground, the seeds of which sprout quickly, as well as those that do not tolerate transplanting well.
Growing seedlings of annuals is carried out in the following cases: – if you need to achieve early flowering, – if the plants have a long growing season.
The grown seedlings of annuals are planted in a permanent place in May. In order not to injure the plants by transplanting, it is better to grow them in peat pots, from which the seedlings are not removed during planting.
When sowing seeds for seedlings in boxes, grown seedlings need thinning or picking
The timing of sowing flowers is indicated on the seed package. Some plants are sown in winter (lobelia, Shabo carnation). Most often, sowing is performed in early March. At this time, sow: – petunia, – snapdragon, – cineraria.
The timing of sowing seeds in open ground will depend on the resistance of the plants to frost. In early spring, you can sow mignonette, calendula. In mid-May, heat-loving flowers are sown: marigolds, nasturtiums, morning glories, zinnias, cosmeas.
Growing biennial and perennial flowers
Plants belonging to biennials do not bloom in the first year, and after flowering in the second year they die off. Sowing of biennials is carried out more often in the middle of summer directly into the ground. In the spring, you can sow viola, forget-me-nots, daisies, then for the first time they will bloom by autumn. In some cases, biennials are grown as seedlings. Sowing for seedlings is carried out in protected ground in February. In this case, you can get blooming viola in the first year.
Perennial flowers can grow in one place for several years, they bloom annually. They can be sown both in open and protected ground. Delphinium, loosestrife, decorative bows are sown in open ground in March-April. In April-May, geraniums and carnations are planted. In July-August, perennials are sown, the seeds of which quickly lose their germination: marigolds, lumbago, muscari and others.
Most often, perennials are planted in the spring.
In late autumn, you need to sow perennial asters, daylilies primroses, aconites, irises, fragrant violets. Perennials can also be grown by seedlings. In this case, sowing for seedlings is done at home in January-February, and in spring the plants can be planted in a permanent place. In this way, primrose is often planted.
To obtain good shoots, the seeds of some plants need to be stratified – exposed to low temperatures. The duration of stratification is different. For some (phlox, peonies, aconites), this period should be from several months to one year. For asters, snapdragons, delphiniums, three to four weeks are enough.
