Painting a gazebo or any other wooden structure is a standard situation that every owner of a summer cottage will have to face. The primary question is how to save a wooden frame from the harmful effects of the sun and rain. The article describes how to paint the gazebo so that it looks presentable.
General rules
The influence of various atmospheric phenomena and the development of microorganisms in the wood can worsen its appearance. From this, the wooden structure loses its original attractiveness and spoils the overall composition of the summer cottage. To maintain the attractive appearance of the gazebo, it is recommended to treat the tree with special compounds that seal the material.
Close attention should be paid to the choice of coating, because it depends on its quality for how long the tree will retain an attractive appearance. It is for this reason that experts do not recommend saving on coverage – it is better to spend less money on the final decoration of the gazebo.

Tree
Before painting a tree, you should carefully examine the condition of the boards from which the structure is made. They can be conditionally divided into 4 groups:
- New and refurbished board. Such a coating is dry, carefully polished, has a light color. It can be covered with stain or any other protective coating.
- New unfinished board. A poorly sanded board cannot be stained evenly with a stain. The result is an uneven coating, so before you start painting, you need to process the material.
- A long-term burnt-out board can only be painted with dense colored paints.
- Wood that has already been painted. Before applying the coating, it is worth finding out what composition the previous paint had, so that the new layer does not curl.
Coatings for wood are divided into several types:
- Transparent – distinguish between water, oil and varnish impregnation. The most famous are olive, acrylic and stain.
- Opaque – these are various enamels intended for application to the facade of a building in the country, as well as paints based on polymers.
Protective equipment
Basically, impregnations are divided into the following groups:
- Salt solution – protects the material from mold and fire. Experts recommend choosing it if there is a barbecue in the gazebo. A feature of the solution is the difficulty of its penetration into a solid material, so the impregnation must be applied under high pressure.
- Water-based products are great for finishing. They prevent the growth of fungus and do not let moisture through. The solution is easy to apply even with a brush.
Among the many solvent-based impregnations, it is better to choose colored ones – they will help to immediately decorate the gazebo. Such compounds quickly penetrate into the structure of the tree.
Oil-based impregnations are used as a top coat.
Tinting
Pavilions are built mainly from pine logs, the natural color of which is very light. Such wood and similar species should be painted with a protective coating that gives the logs a light brown tint. At the heart of such a tool is a tinting pigment that enhances the natural beauty of the tree. Most often, tonings are found in the form of primers; they need to be applied only on a pre-treated smooth base.
Paint
The coating is based on polymers. There are the following types of paints:
- Acrylic. Non-toxic, dilute with water before application. Designed for painting wood in a certain color. If latex is present in the composition, then the coating will be glossy, and a film will appear on the surface that does not allow moisture to pass through and prevents mechanical damage.
- Silicone. The composition of the paint includes resins and silicone components. Such a coating is called self-cleaning, because after drying, dust cannot settle on the surface. The paint is waterproof, but breathable.
- silicate. Differ in the increased moisture resistance. The peculiarity of the paint is that it should be applied to a surface cleaned of other coatings.
- Alkyd coating is expensive, but it reliably protects the tree from atmospheric factors. The paint should be diluted with a solvent before use.
Laki
Lacquers are completely transparent coating. They can be divided into several types:
- With toning effect. The product contains toxic substances that are harmful to humans. Apply varnish on a wooden surface in layers, while the previous layer must dry completely. Such a varnish has several disadvantages: it is difficult to apply, peels off upon contact with water, and becomes cloudy over time. If there is a desire to change the coating, it should be completely removed from the surface.
- Parquet or yacht coatings are completely transparent and waterproof. There are glossy, semi-matte and matte varnishes on the market. The average service life of a lacquered floor and wall covering is from 5 years. Some manufacturers add components to the varnish that make it resistant to the sun.
For metal
When painting a gazebo on the street, do not forget about the processing of metal elements. There are several mandatory steps, without which metal structures will begin to deteriorate – this is a rust protection coating and painting.
Rust treatment
It is important to treat all metal surfaces with an anti-corrosion agent even at the construction stage of the gazebo. This should be done even with new pipes, because rust may also be present on them. Before you start painting, you should get rid of rust on the metal with a grinder and a grinding wheel.
The next step is priming the surface. Almost every primer is toxic and harmful to humans, so gloves, goggles and a respirator must be used when applying.
When the product has dried, it is worth inspecting the gazebo and cleaning up the streaks and sagging with sandpaper.
Decorative coatings
When choosing a paint color, you need to focus on the overall design of the landscape area. The most common shades:
- White. It visually facilitates the design and gives those present a feeling of freshness and cleanliness. This option is suitable for painting gratings.
- Green and blue are also used by many gazebo owners to cover various metal structures, such as fences, porches, and forged elements. Such shades are in good harmony with the overall interior of the site.
- Black color – very often used to create contrast. As a rule, forging is painted in this color.
By choosing the paint you like and a high-quality protective coating, you can get a beautiful gazebo in which the whole family will spend summer evenings.
