How to make your natural hair spray?
Make your own natural hair spray? This seems a little curious when you are used to classic lacquers. It is indeed difficult to imagine that it is possible to create it yourself. And yet, it only takes a few ingredients to make a homemade hairspray.
What is the problem with conventional lacquers?
Problematic substances in lacquers
Like many classic beauty products, hair fixing hairsprays contain substances that are sometimes problematic. In addition to irritating or allergenic ingredients, some of the best-selling hairsprays contain endocrine disruptors. It is, for example, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, a UV filter which exhibits high toxicity. Others, on the contrary, do not contain this substance but can be irritating to sensitive people.
Because it is pulverized into very fine molecules, hairspray can migrate into the respiratory tract. This does not pose a problem when the use is occasional but a spray sprayed daily can, in the long term, expose to certain dangers.
Polluting sprays
Conventional hairsprays are also bad for the planet. In addition to the dispersion of molecules in the air, it is also the packaging that poses a problem. Especially since with the different logos, it is sometimes difficult to navigate and know where to throw them.
These sprays are, most of the time, aerosols. If you also see a flame symbol there, the product is flammable. In this case, he will have to go to the recycling center. If there is no danger symbol, it should be treated as ordinary metal waste, in the corresponding bin. In any case, an empty hair spray, just like a can of shaving foam, should never be thrown away with the household garbage.
However, there are new products on the supermarket shelves or in professional retailers. More natural lacquers that do not contain criticized substances and forge their reputation mainly on plant ingredients.
Manufacturers even manage to reduce the size of packages with more concentrated formulations, which therefore require fewer sprays. They are also “non-aerosol” and recyclable. If you don’t have the time to make your own hairspray, this is a great option.
The constant renewal of the product
If the lacquer is polluting, both in its composition and in its packaging, another problem arises. Spray cans, like shampoos and all beauty products, drain quickly. A fortiori the lacquers which, used every day, last a month at most.
They must therefore be renewed many times a year, especially if it is an essential part of your beauty wardrobe. It takes 7 to 9 € for the most famous brands. Over a whole year, the bill is still significant.
How to make a homemade lacquer?
Between the potentially dangerous substances and the waste produced because of the lacquers, wanting to make your own natural lacquer is therefore understandable.
The lacquer is unique in that it must fix, without “cardboard effect”, and bring shine. There are thus different natural lacquer recipes to obtain this result. The most common are to use sugar or beer, which serve as fixing agents. Mixed with water and once dry on the hair, they don’t stick at all.
In both cases, use a misting spray that results in an ultra-fine vaporization. If you have a bottle of floral water with a sprayer of this type, it can be used again for this purpose. Otherwise, in store, you will find it without problem.
Recipe for lacquer with sugar
- Mix a tablespoon of sugar with 200 ml of hot water.
- Pour into the spray bottle when the mixture has cooled.
Lacquer recipe with beer
- You can use the beer as is in a spray bottle. But first, expel the bubbles or leave the spray open for a few hours before using it.
- You can also mix 2/3 beer and 1/3 water to lighten it.
However, these homemade lacquers do not have the same fixing force, for example for a bun, as a classic lacquer. To achieve such a result, a stronger chemistry is unfortunately essential.
