How to make the correct nail shape
Decide which nail shape you like. Pay attention to whether the original version is long enough for this and whether this template looks good on your hands, whether it fits the shape of your fingers.
Basic nail shapes:
- square
- oval
- squouval (a hybrid of square and oval shapes)
- almond-shaped
- stylet
Make sure you have the necessary tools. To properly sharpen, you need files with abrasiveness suitable for your nails – straight, rectangular, “boomerangs” or “boats”.
Rectangular files are good for adjusting the length of the free edge of the nail, “boomerangs” are designed to file down an artificial plate near the cuticle
In order for your nails to be beautiful, perfectly symmetrical in shape, the first time you will need to carry out painstaking work. However, with practice, you will have less effort and time to get a manicure. Visually draw a conditional vertical line through the center of the nail plate. This will be the main axis around which you will be guided when creating the shape. The halves of the nail plate on each side of the axis must match completely. Otherwise, a neat manicure will not work.
Make prep cuts on both sides of the plate to define the shape of the nails on all toes. Make sure that the length of the nails is the same.

For a professional manicure, it is important that the side lines are parallel. Do not break this rule, otherwise none of the five types of nails will be elegant. To create a square, oval, squouval, almond shape, or stiletto, work from the free edge of the nail.
When creating a square shape, the edge of the nail should be perpendicular to the socket. At the intersection of the outer line and the main axis, lower the edge by one and a half millimeters. Also, cut along the side edges from the top by a millimeter so that the nail does not resemble a trapezoid. Get rid of too sharp corners with a file.
To give the nails an oval shape, it is necessary to round off the edge line, removing two millimeters from each side from half the length of the protruding edge of the nail. The square-oval shape, or squouval, is performed as follows: the upper third of the free part of the nail is determined, which protrudes beyond the limits of the finger, and from this length the nail is gently rounded to the lateral lines.
If you want to get a round shape of the nails, then they must be rounded off from the middle of the free length of the nail plate. To obtain a stylet-like shape, the upper point of the main axis is connected at a right angle to the base of the free edge, and then the too sharp tip is slightly filed with a file.
