A specific variety of corn is used to make popcorn. Grains of such corn can be bought at the supermarket, or you can grow it at your summer cottage. You can cook popcorn without any problems at home, and in two ways: in the microwave and on the stove.
Microwave popcorn
Pour some vegetable oil into a special dish for the microwave oven, add corn kernels and salt, stir until the kernels are covered with oil. Take enough corn so that the grains are in one layer. Place the lid on the container and microwave for 3 minutes.
Popcorn on the stove
Choose a deep skillet or saucepan and pour vegetable oil into it, add salt and put on fire. When the oil is hot, add the corn, stir everything well and cover. Remember that the corn should be in one layer. As soon as you hear pops, remove the popcorn from the heat – the rest of the grains will open in the hot oil.
Salty, sweet, cheesy – how?
At home, you can also add a variety of flavors to popcorn: spicy, sweet, or with cheese. With spices, everything is clear – it is better to add them to the oil before frying. But adding vanilla sugar or coconut flakes is better after removing the popcorn from the stove. For the same purpose, you can use the zest of lemon and orange.
To make cheese-flavored popcorn, you’ll need hard cheese for that. It is best to use Parmesan. Grate it on a fine grater and at the moment when the popcorn is already all open, but still hot, add the cheese and mix everything quickly.
