Is coconut milk healthy?
Coconut milk is fatty milk. The fat content is around 20%, which is considerable compared to cow’s milk. These are mainly saturated fats (18,9g / 100g), but also some omega-6 fats (233mg / 100g). Importantly, the saturated fatty acid fraction contains lauric acid, which supports the immune system, but also contributes to the reduction of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. This milk is also a source folates, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, manganese, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. It also provides dietary fiber. Thus, it is a nutritious and valuable drink, worth considering when looking for substitutes for traditional milk. Most often it can be found in a can or cardboard box, but there are also frozen or dried versions, where it is enough to add water to get a tasty drink.
Can You Drink Coconut Milk On Your Diet?
We have already written about the composition and health effects of coconut oil. How is it with milk? Its advantages are also mainly based on medium chain fatty acids (MCFA – Medium Chain Fatty Acids), of which coconut milk contains approx. 34 g in a glass (250 ml). Research indicates their effect on both the reduction of VLDL cholesterol and the acceleration of metabolism by about 5 percent compared to people who ate Long Chain Fatty Acids (LCFA). The introduction of about 30 g of MCFA into the diet daily had such an effect.
Does coconut milk support weight loss?
Further observations further indicate the effect of MCFA from coconut fat on the burning of more calories by the body. Publication in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition from 1999 describes an analysis of the nutrition of 12 women for 14 days. Those ladies who consumed coconut fat burned on average about 33 percent more calories per minute than those treated with LCFA from bovine fat. Other studies also indicate the effect of medium chain fatty acid consumption on weight loss. For a period of 16 weeks, 40 people ate meals rich in MCFA or LCFA. People in the first group had a weight loss of 3 kg, and in the second group – 1,5 kg. The results were published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2008.
However, it should be remembered that long-term ingestion of large amounts of medium chain fatty acids can even harm the cardiovascular system and increase blood cholesterol levels. Therefore, coconut products should be used with caution and moderation, and maintain a variety of diet.
How To Make Coconut Milk?
Although there is currently no problem with buying coconut milk, the ones we prepare ourselves will definitely not contain any additives such as guar gum or preservatives. How to make them yourself? Here is a simple recipe.
Ingredients: 1 ripe coconut Water
Preparation:
- Pour the liquid from the coconut (it is best to drill through one of the coconut’s ‘eyes’). It can be used for drinks, e.g. smoothies.
- Split the coconut and take out the pulp with a spoon.
- Put the pulp into a blender and gradually add water and mix until you get a liquid consistency.
- Using a gas or a strainer, you can separate the liquid from the chips, which can be used, for example, in baking. However, you can drink milk together with the solids.
- The milk should be kept in the refrigerator and consumed within 5 days. They can also be frozen and stored for up to 3 months.
