The British called punks “ cheesy boys ” at the dawn of this subculture. Рunk – from English “rag”, “rubbish”, in Russian: punks. Punks were distinguished not only by their cocky disposition and love for forbidden fruits, but by very peculiar outfits, as well as mohawk hairstyles.
The protest mood of the “lost generation” that appeared in the United States at the beginning of the last century quickly spread throughout the world and took on the most unexpected forms, one of which was the punk subculture. At first, the movement did not have much ideological content, asocial behavior based on the desire to be “not like everyone else” quickly captured young lazy people and ordinary hooligans. In America, they even said: “If you want to fight, go to the punks”, so “punk” was a curse at first.
However, such a “loose” freedom was to the liking of quite talented people who drew inspiration from fights, alcohol and drugs, and by the sixties of the twentieth century, punk had acquired inner fulfillment and ideology, which was expressed in the phrase: “The world is dying, the future no. Do whatever you want. ” Punks have ceased to be the scum of society, they have their own music, poetry, characteristic cinema and, accordingly, an external style of expressing their own “I”.
The punk style is not their know-how, it is a kind of aggressive symbiosis. The fashion was based on the images of rock and roll idols, often brought to the point of absurdity, exaggerated and twisted. The famous biker jacket and ripped jeans migrated from rock and roll to punks, from the police and military – ankle boots and military elements, sneakers from “Latinos”, and collars, wristbands and brass knuckles – from rockers.
The first punks were simply shaggy; men did not cut, wash or comb their hair. It is difficult to say who and when first shaved the back of his head, leaving the mohawk on his head, but this idea was also not new. Mohawk – a hairstyle, consisting of a bun of hair on the crown, was characteristic of the Indians of the South, who used tree sap and clay to make their hair stand, these same substances often dyed their hair. The hairstyle was borrowed for two reasons. Firstly, only warriors wore it, and punks, like no one else, are characterized by warlike moods, and secondly, it was the most striking distinctive sign.
The Iroquois were of two types: classic and with thorns. For both, the hair was rigidly “set”, having previously shaved the hair on the sides, leaving a strip of 2–4 cm in the center of the head from the forehead to the back of the head. The rest of the hair should be combed with a fine comb. Comb so that a tough mug forms at the roots, which will hold the entire structure. The fleece should be continuous and even. The resulting result was poured with varnish (and in its absence – with sugar diluted in water) and leveled with hands so that the fleece would not bristle in different directions, but was directed upward; the longer the hair is, the higher the fleece should be.
The ends of the hair were often dyed in “acidic” colors, using blue, brilliant green, iodine, and other substances.
Today, punk hairstyles can be seen on celebrities. The most popular is the Quiff haircut, which is close to the classic mohawk. Its essence is to remove hair at an angle so that the hair from the forehead to the back of the head becomes shorter and shorter. Vertical bouffant is not done, but with the help of a styler and varnish they raise the hair, creating volume. More recently, Gwen Stefanie, Kelly Osbourne, Christina Aguilera have shown such hairstyles on the tracks.
Mohawk – men’s hairstyle, but stylized mohawks are happy to try on women too
Liberty spikes are harder and more pretentious. The haircut is done like a quiff, but the hair is collected around the perimeter of the head in bunches, which are combed separately, thickly filled with varnish or gel and formed into spikes like those on the helmet of the Statue of Liberty. The crown is either shaved off, or cut short.
