How to make a herringbone shelf with your own hands: instructions with a photo

Today, when children are well versed in smartphones, but do not like to work with their hands, it is especially cool and important to do something beautiful with a child.

Just what? Together with Maria Marsakova, an artisan of the Leroy Merlin New Riga hypermarket, we have made for you a master class on making a cute Christmas tree shelf for New Year’s toys. The craft will require the participation of the whole family and the tools that every dad has in the house. Well, a simple set of necessary materials can be bought at a construction hypermarket.

Materials

1 planed board 20 x 146 x 2000 mm, 1 picket board 14 x 96 x 2000 mm, 1 block 18 x 40 x 2000 mm.

Wood screws 3,5 x 35 mm, 100 g, wood screws 3,5 x 50 mm, 50 g.

Acrylic wood stain pine color, 1 kg.

Tools

1 sheet of sanding paper P120, screwdriver, screw bit, work gloves, tape measure, square, hacksaw for metal or electric jigsaw with a saw blade for woodworking, pencil, brush 20 mm wide.

We cut out the tiers of the Christmas tree

1st tier

The herringbone consists of 5 tiers of different lengths. To create the first, draw a triangle on a 146 mm wide board with an angle of inclination of the sides of 45 degrees. We start the markings from the edge of the board to reduce the amount of waste. Carefully cut out the part with a hacksaw or jigsaw. While dad is sawing, the children, under the guidance of mom, can start marking the next part.

2st tier

To mark the second tier, measure the length of the base of the first tier. By the way, when you turn the board over, you will find that one edge with the desired angle of inclination is already ready. Adding 10 centimeters to the length of the base of the first tier, we get the length of the base of tier number 2. Set aside this distance on the board and draw a straight line from the found point at an angle of 45 degrees. We make a cut along the marked line.

3st tier

We measure the length of the base of tier 2. Turning the board over, you will again find that one edge with the desired angle of 45 degrees is already ready. Add 10 centimeters to the length of the base of the second tier and get the length of the base of tier number 3. Set aside this distance on the board and draw a straight line from the found point at an angle of 45 degrees. We make a cut along the marked line.

We mark out tiers 4 and 5 according to the already described scheme, each time measuring the length of the base of the previous tier. Each new detail will be 10 centimeters longer than the previous one.

We cut out the shelves

For the shelves, we use a 96 mm wide board. We measure tiers 2 and 3 along the long side and divide the resulting numbers in half. Saw off two pieces of different lengths from the board in accordance with the measurement results. We measure the length of the lower side of tier 5 and saw off from the board a segment equal to 2/3 of the length of the base of the tier.

We cut out the parts of the support and the trunk

The length of the tree support is obtained by measuring the length of the lower part of the third tier. We will cut at right angles, so the work can be entrusted to children. Saw off two pieces of the obtained length from the bar and saw off another piece of the same length from the board 146 mm wide. Then we saw off another piece of 104 cm long from the bar. It will serve as the trunk of the Christmas tree.

Grinding details

To make the Christmas tree look neat and not leave splinters on your hands, the edges of all parts must be sanded with sandpaper to a soft roundness. This work should be entrusted to mom, since accuracy is the strong point of any woman.

Paint the details

To make the tree look beautiful, you need to paint and dry the parts before assembly. Let the children take care of this work, and the mother will arrange a workplace for them so as not to stain the floor. Don’t forget to wear gloves!

We collect the Christmas tree

To assemble the support and attach the barrel, we use self-tapping screws 50 mm long. Putting the structure together using illustrations. This is where dad’s attention and eye are needed.

To attach the tiers to the trunk, we use 35 mm self-tapping screws. The installation of the tiers should be started from the very top, stepping back 3 centimeters from the edge of the trunk. When assembling the longlines, we make sure that the parts are located exactly in the middle of the trunk. We screw in the self-tapping screws from the back using a screwdriver with a bat. Children can screw in self-tapping screws while dad holds the parts.

Shelves must be placed on tiers without tilting. This can be done by eye, but if you don’t trust yourself, add a tool called a level to your toolbox. It is most convenient to align the shelves when one of the two self-tapping screws is already screwed in.

The Christmas tree is ready, and mom can start decorating it with toys and candles laid out on the shelves. Happy New Year!
