How to make a DIY sleep mask: step by step instructions
Scientists argue that a person must sleep in complete darkness, otherwise the rest becomes incomplete. However, if you need to sleep on the road, at a party or during daylight hours, you will hardly be able to avoid light irritants. In such a situation, you cannot do without a special mask: putting on an accessory over your eyes, the sleeper plunges into complete darkness and has the opportunity to enjoy a sound sleep. How to make a sleep mask with your own hands, while spending a minimum of funds?
First you need to stock up on all the necessary materials:
· Interlining;
· A cloth for the outer layer of the mask (satin or silk);
· Flannel or cotton;
· An elastic band;
· Lace.
It is better to pre-cut the silhouette of the mask from cardboard or thick paper. The standard dimensions of the accessory are 19,5 * 9,5 cm.
DIY sleep mask: step by step instructions
1. We transfer the cardboard pattern to the fabric and cut out the same details from flannel, non-woven fabric and satin (without seam allowances).
2. We fold the resulting parts as follows: the flannel layer – face down, then the non-woven blank and the satin part face up. We fasten all layers with safety pins.
3. Cut out a rectangular piece from satin 55 cm long and 14 cm wide. Sew the long sides from the inside out, and then turn the blank out onto the front side. On a typewriter, we draw off the drawstring for the elastic. Insert the rubber band.
4. Sew the finished tape with an elastic band inserted inside to the edges of the mask along the outlined line. You do not need to sew up the edges of the product completely: you need a small hole to turn the mask onto the front side.
5. Turn the mask over to the front side, carefully sew up the edge that was left unstitched.
6. We decorate the product along the outer edge with lace. If the lace trim does not suit you, you can decorate the mask with rhinestones, bows and other accessories. The main thing is to connect your imagination and not be afraid of experiments.
Professional craftsmen give some more practical advice on how to sew a do-it-yourself sleep mask.
The product is best done in a classic rectangular shape with a recess for the bridge of the nose and with rounded edges.
If desired, non-woven fabric can be replaced with cheaper analogs – padding polyester or foam rubber. But then the middle layer of the accessory will have to be doubled so that the sun’s rays do not break through the mask.
For the inner layer, you need to choose hypoallergenic smooth materials that will not harm the skin of the eyes.
