How to learn how to properly inject into a vein

Intravenous drug administration is a complex procedure that is difficult to perform without special medical education. We will tell you how to make an injection into a vein competently and as safely as possible.

What is the correct way to give an injection into a vein? First of all, you need to disinfect your hands and the place where the needle is inserted.

It should be noted right away that performing an intravenous injection by an unprepared person is associated with a great risk to the patient’s health and life, therefore the procedure should be carried out by a qualified specialist.

How to learn to inject into a vein?

To perform an injection into a vein, you need:

  • a syringe with a fine needle,
  • cotton wool,
  • disinfectant alcohol solution,
  • harness,
  • sterile medical gloves.

The veins of the inner bend of the elbow are considered the optimal place for injection – it is in this place that they are clearly visible and easier to feel. It is also possible to inject drugs into the venous vessels of the hands and forearms, much less often injections are performed into the vessels of the lower extremities.

It is very important for intravenous infusions to get the needle exactly into the vein, minimally traumatizing it. Before injection, lightly press on the skin a couple of centimeters above the intended injection site to raise the vein slightly. There is no need to knock and clap on the vein: in order for it to swell slightly and approach the skin surface, it needs to be lightly massaged for 30 seconds.

Before proceeding with the intravenous administration of the drug, you need to take care of the sterility of your hands: wash them thoroughly with soap and wear disposable medical gloves

How to properly inject into a vein:

  1. Ask the patient to extend the arm and place it back up on a firm surface.
  2. Find a well-visible vein in the cubital fossa.
  3. Place a tourniquet on your arm 10-15 cm above the injection site. Tighten, but not too tight. Ask the patient to make a fist 15-20 times.
  4. Apply a cotton ball soaked in alcohol solution to the area where the needle is inserted.
  5. Draw the medicine into a syringe, then expel any air bubbles from it. Be extremely careful! The smallest air bubble trapped in a vein can cause instant death from air embolism.
  6. Position the needle parallel to the skin with the cut up, from the wrist to the shoulder. Insert it under the skin at a 40-45 degree angle.
  7. Pull the piston slightly towards you. If blood gets into the syringe, you hit exactly the vein.
  8. Inject the drug slowly, then carefully withdraw the needle.
  9. Clamp the injection site with an alcohol swab.

Only qualified specialists can perform intravenous injections, since not only the health, but also the life of the patient depends on the correctness of the procedure.
