To appreciate a good wine, you need to taste it properly. Everything is important here: the temperature and time of serving, the right glass and the method of use. Even the way the taster holds the fragile vessel of the drink matters.
The requirements of etiquette prescribe to take a glass of wine only by the leg, and by its lower part. You can use at least 3 fingers to grip, in the case of heavy glasses – all 5. These requirements apply to any type of drink: white, red, rose wine, martini.
The only exception is champagne. When savoring sparkling wines, you can additionally hold the glass by the base (but not by the bowl!).
How can you hold a glass of wine
The leg is compressed with three fingers (thumb, middle and index), the rest are freely located on the base.
The leg is taken “in a pinch”, as if the taster is holding a fountain pen.
On one side of the leg is the thumb, the rest on the other side.
The leg is clamped with two fingers (forefinger and thumb), and the middle one rests slightly against the stand.
How not to hold a glass of wine
It is not allowed to support the glass by the base if it is not champagne.
You should not put aside the little finger: if once it was a sign of aristocracy, today it speaks of bad taste.
It is forbidden to touch the cup of the glass. Fingerprints look ugly and wine overheats.
No need to use only 2 fingers to capture: this is bad form. You can take the leg with three, four or five fingers.
