What is the treatment of damaged nail matrix?
Hello, I would like to ask you what it looks like in practice treatment of damaged nail matrix. A few months ago, a kitchen cupboard door fell on my bare foot, hitting my toenails unhappily. I did not think it would be such a serious damage, but it turned out that apart from the bruise and the fact that a hematoma appeared under one nail, the other was more seriously damaged. I have already visited a doctor some time ago who found damage to the nail matrix, but did not even offer me any alternative.
I thought the effect damage to the nail matrix will be that it will just stay that way, but I found out recently that there are some methods of treating damaged nail matrix and I wonder if they are actually effective. How to heal a damaged nail matrix? Who should I contact to apply such a process to me and can any damage to the nail matrix be treated? I will be very grateful for all the advice and information on the methods of treating the damaged nail matrix.
The doctor explains the methods of treating the damaged nail matrix
In the human body, the nail plays a protective role for the fingertip. The largest part of the nail is its body, i.e. the visible one nail plate. Underneath it is nail bed, and even deeper – the finger bone. The lower, white part of the nail body is called the nipple, often, at least partially, covered by the epidermal helix. The nail matrix is hidden at the very base of the nail, under the epidermis and dermis. The nail matrix is the place where the nail is formed and the cells of the nail bed, it is the place where the nail plate grows. The posterior and lateral part of the nail plate is stuck in the epidermal fold called the shaft. It is under the shaft that lies the proximal part of the bearing, which is called the matrix.
The most common the cause of nail deformation there is an injury or nail tumor. The fingernail of the middle finger is the nail that is injured most often. Sometimes, when the nail matrix is damaged, the distal phalanx also fractures. In this case, it may be necessary to keep your finger still. Nail matrix absence can lead to splitting of the nail.
The growth of the nail plate is approximately 2 mm per month. This process is several times slower in the toes than in the hands. If a nail plate is removed for nail matrix repair, new nail growth is delayed for an additional 3-4 weeks. After the nail matrix is repaired, it will take approximately 12 months for the nail to return to its pre-damaged appearance. If he doesn’t give up repair of damaged nail matrix, in the future, the new nail may be deformed. The greatest chance of success is repair of the nail matrix in the acute phase of the injury (24 hours after the incident).
Joining the surgical treatment of the nail matrix depends on the degree of its damage and it is decided by the doctor who finds the damage to the nail matrix.
