How to hang a modular picture on the wall: choosing a place, fasteners

In recent years, images broken into several fragments have become popular. They even came up with a special name for them – a modular picture. Fragments – modules – do not always have the same size, so just nailing it will not work. How to hang a modular picture, in what place and at what height – we’ll talk about all this later.

Determining the location

Before you hang a modular picture, you must first find a place for it, determine the height of the fragments. Of course, there are no strict rules – this is a matter of taste, but there are recommendations on how to do it better.

We decide where the modular picture will look advantageous

Which wall

Modern trends in the design of apartments – painted or finished with decorative plaster walls – an excellent backdrop for paintings. A modular picture is a bright element that will attract attention, so there should not be other decor elements that attract attention on the wall. And this is the first requirement.

Secondly, the wall must be of sufficient size. To be more precise, it is better to choose the size of the canvas depending on the size of the wall. But, if the picture is already there, but you haven’t figured out where to hang it, when choosing a place, we proceed from such rules. Either the wall must be at least twice as wide, or the image must occupy at least 70% of the free space.

Finding a free wall in modern interiors is not too difficult.

On the other hand, if you hang a small canvas on a large wall, it will look “not very good”. At a minimum, the modular picture should take up a third of the width. Maybe a little less, but you need to look at each case, since a lot depends on the size and format of the modules, whether there is furniture under it and what size it is.

Location relative to furniture

You can talk in more detail about the choice of location by attaching to the rooms. If you are going to hang a modular picture in the living room, the usual place is above the sofa, sofa. Some kind of decoration is right here. But in order to create an organic picture, the dimensions of the canvas should be about the same as sofas or sofas. Then the composition is balanced.

It is not at all necessary to place a modular picture strictly above the sofa. This is an option for classic designs and other styles that are characterized by symmetry. For modern trends, asymmetry can “play” better, but such an arrangement is more difficult to balance: it is important not to leave the other part completely unattended.

In the bedroom, a common place for a modular painting is above the head of the bed. Immediately about the dimensions: the width of the canvas is preferably about the same as the width of the bed. Maybe a little narrower or wider. Wider can be grabbing bedside tables, you can even from wall to wall. The bed is a bulky object and large images do not break the harmony, but just create it. Smaller beds in width are also possible, but here the difference should not be big. No matter how beautiful the image is, if it is small in size, it does not look good.

If the bed is located in the middle of the wall, the center of the composition should be located above the middle of the headboard. But again, this is for classic interiors. Although, in the bedroom it is they who prevail. If you decide to experiment with asymmetry, then it is better to look for a modular picture from modules of different formats.

At what height

Having decided on the place, you need to decide at what distance from the ceiling to hang the picture. As a rule, the canvases are arranged so that the center of the composition is at eye level. This is approximately 150-165 cm from the floor.

Since the sizes of fragments in modular paintings can be different, it is the center of the image that is located at this level. This approach is universal, but if the ceilings are too high and the fragments are massive, you can raise it a little. The main criterion is a harmonious look. No others. Before you hang a modular picture, it is advisable to evaluate how well the place is chosen. If you have helpers, ask them to hold the key pieces at the correct height. This will allow you to really imagine how everything will look “live”, and not in your imagination.

Distance between modules

The distance between modular paintings usually ranges from 1,5 cm to 4 cm and depends on its dimensions. Less for the little ones, more for the big ones. To decide, you can lay out the fragments on the floor and choose the distance empirically.

When choosing the distance between the segments, it is necessary to solve a difficult problem. On the one hand, the distance should be sufficient to make it clear that this is still a modular picture. On the other hand, it should still be unified, the general idea should not be lost. If the distance between the elements is too large, they look like separate paintings on the same theme, and not as a whole.

Too much distance, and three canvases look like separate paintings

If the fragments are hung too close, the effect of modularity is lost, the main highlight of this decor element is gone – several parts. There should be a clearly visible gap between the parts, into which the color of the wall is visible. This is what gives the uniqueness of this type of jewelry.

Another mistake – parts are too close

The easiest way is to decide “on the spot”. Having laid out all the elements on the floor and aligning the pattern, begin to push them apart. All fragments must be used, no matter how many there are – three, four, five or seven. This is the only way to get the correct distance. When pushing them apart, carefully look from the height of your height. As soon as the “integrity” disappears, go back 5 mm. This, most likely, is the desired distance.

Fastener selection

The choice of fasteners for paintings depends on the material of the walls. There are traditional options: hooks on the wall and loops on the picture frame. But in order to hang a triptych on a concrete wall in the traditional way, it will be necessary to make three holes with a perforator – this is at least half an hour. If the picture consists of five or more parts, even more time will be required. When working with a puncher, it is difficult to make holes strictly in the intended place, so only acc.

For wall mounting

If the walls are wooden, the situation is simpler: self-tapping screws and nails enter without difficulty. Problems arise if the walls are plasterboard or made of cellular concrete. Only special butterfly dowels are suitable here.

What else can pictures be attached to, except for dowels / screws / nails? There are such options:

  • Double sided tape. But a double-sided foam tape is better for these purposes. It is several millimeters thick, so it will be easier to hang a picture. This method is suitable if the walls are painted or finished with decorative plaster.
We hang a modular picture using special fasteners
  • Special hook for pictures. There are five to seven small-diameter metal pins in a plastic case with a hook. The hook is applied to the right place, the pins are hammered into the wall material with a hammer. Suitable for any wall: drywall, concrete, wood. With seeming fragility, metal holders easily enter the walls of panel high-rise buildings. And, last but not least, they hold the weight well.

On a stretcher

The hook on the wall is only part of the story. Before hanging a modular picture, you need to attach a loop / rope for which the hook will cling. There are options:

  • At a distance of 5-10 cm from the top, a rope / wire / twine is fixed. Distance as such doesn’t matter. It is important that it be exactly the same on all fragments of the modular picture. The rope / twine is attached to the stretcher using a construction stapler. Roll the edge of the twine twice, attach it in the right place, shoot with several staples (two or three – no less).
Types of fasteners for paintings – choose options
  • Attach a small loop in the center of the subframe. They are sold in specialized stores., there are several types. For modular paintings, it is desirable to have the same. They are attached with small nails.
  • Staples. They differ from loops in shape. Can be fastened in the center or along the edges. Accordingly, the hooks on the walls will need to be placed either in the center or at the edges.

As already mentioned, it is very important that all fasteners are installed at the same distance from the top of the frame. Otherwise, it will be extremely difficult to hang a modular picture evenly.

Markup methods

There are at least two ways to mark the wall for hanging modular paintings. The first is to circle the modules on the wall. Rather, mark the corners of each fragment. Let’s start with the central element of the composition. We alternately apply the fragments to the wall, circle the corners. Don’t forget about the distance between the modules.

Modules often have different heights. To correctly position them relative to each other, select some moment that is present on at least two adjacent fragments. Make a mark on the wall (put a dot). On the modules that are in the middle of the composition, you need to put marks on the right and left. Set the next fragment according to the marked mark, move it to a predetermined distance, mark the upper corners.

Aligning a drawing by marks

When all the fragments are marked, we find the middle, set the selected fasteners at the desired height. “Required height” is so that the top of the picture is on the mark made. At the same time, it must be remembered that the tensioned thread or the installed bracket / loop are placed on the stretcher. In principle, a deviation of two, three, four and even five centimeters from the marks is not critical. It is important that the pattern on the fragments match.

Horizontal modules are rare

The second markup method is probably easier. Take paper (newspapers, posters, wallpaper remnants, etc.), cut out copies of the elements of the modular picture. Exactly in size. Make marks on paper (as described above) so that you can correctly align the elements on the wall relative to each other. On paper, mark where the loops / staples are installed, the fishing line is stretched.

We place paper blanks on the wall. You can fix it with pins (on the wallpaper) or buttons. In this option, you can evaluate whether you have chosen the right location and make adjustments. As you can see, the option is more practical. Further, in the place where the mark is made (there is a bracket or a loop in the picture), we fasten the hook. It is possible even through paper. Then we tear off the paper, hang a modular picture.

Faster way

There is one way to hang a modular picture quickly and easily. You will need plates made of transparent plastic. The thickness of the plastic is 2-3 mm, the dimensions of the plates depend on the distance between the modules. The width of the plate for hanging modular pictures can be calculated as follows: twice the width of the frame, plus the distance between the modules. This is the minimum value. You can make it wider, but no. The height of the plate is about 7 cm so that at least three self-tapping screws can be installed. The number of plates is two for each pair of fragments of the modular picture.

In this way, you can hang a modular picture quickly and easily.

We make three holes in the plate so that there is a given distance between the modules and the fasteners fall in the middle of the frame. Then, with the help of plates, we connect all the elements. It remains only to try on the canvas on the wall, decide on the location of the hook. For a triptych, one hook is enough; for a modular picture of 4, 5 or more parts, it is better to install two.
