How to grow mycelium at home

In forests, which are natural habitats for fungi, they multiply by spores. Mushroom farms that cultivate mushrooms use mycelium grown on cereal grain for these purposes.

How to grow mycelium at home on grain

The method of growing mycelium at home on grain is economical. It is used for the cultivation of oyster mushrooms.

Mycelium at home – an affordable way to grow mushrooms

To get mycelium from grain, follow these tips:

  1. Take a portion of any grain, such as wheat, millet, rye or corn, add 2 parts of drinking water, bring to a boil and cook over medium heat for 30 minutes.
  2. Strain the resulting mass through a sieve and spread the boiled grain in a thin layer on a tray so that it dries a little.
  3. Add calcium carbonate to the dried grain, which in its absence is replaced with a mixture of 35 g of chalk and 125 g of gypsum. These components contribute to the rapid growth of mycelium from the grain.
  4. Pour the prepared substrate into jars with a volume of 1-3 liters, filling them by 2/3. A liter jar will need 350 g of substrate.
  5. Transfer the lidded jars with the grain substrate to a large container with hot water and sterilize in boiling water for 1,5 hours. After this time, cool the jars to room temperature.
  6. In each jar through a lid with a hole made, put a stick of the purchased mycelium, seal the hole with sterile cotton wool.

After a week, it will become noticeable that the mycelium has begun to cover the grain with a whitish bloom. In 28 days, the oyster mushroom mycelium will germinate well. After it takes up the entire volume of the jar, the mycelium is planted in a special mushroom block pre-pasteurized at a temperature of + 90 ° C. And in two or three weeks the first harvest of oyster mushrooms will appear.

How to grow mycelium from mushroom spores at home

To grow mycelium from spores, overripe forest mushrooms are cut into pieces and filled with water. After about 12 hours, infused water with chopped mushrooms is poured over a container with earth in which it is planned to grow mushrooms. After planting the spores of fungi, it is necessary to maintain soil moisture, in which case the mycelium will begin to develop rapidly.

This method is not one of the fast ones – the first harvest will appear only after a year.

In this way, the mycelium of boletus, porcini mushrooms and boletus is grown.

Not everyone will take up the reproduction of forest mushrooms due to the lengthy wait for the result of their planting. To obtain a crop, it will be necessary to create conditions as close as possible to those in which they grow in their natural habitat.
