How to give suprastin to children
Suprastin belongs to the first generation antihistamines, its therapeutic effect is well studied. This is one of the few medicines with a pronounced sedative effect that can be given to children at a very early age, from one month, but only as prescribed by a doctor and in strict adherence to the recommended dosage.
For what diseases Suprastin is prescribed for children
This medication will help a child if he or she develops an allergic reaction to insect bites and other medications.
It is also prescribed for the following diseases:
- hives
- neurodermatitis
- dermatitis
- taxidermy
- eczema
Often in babies in the first months of life, symptoms of atopic dermatitis appear; to eliminate them, the child can also be prescribed suprastin. The sedative effect of suprastin is due to the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, this helps to stop severe itching, relieve irritability and improve sleep in a child suffering from this form of dermatitis. The drug will also help with Quincke’s edema, when breathing is difficult or may stop completely due to laryngeal edema.
Please note that suprastin is contraindicated in respiratory diseases and especially in the case of a diagnosis of bronchial asthma
Features of the use of suprastin for children
Suprastin is not available in special dosage forms for young children; in the pharmacy, it can only be bought in the form of 25 mg pills. For young children, there are no clear recommendations on dosage and forms of use, therefore, it should be given to babies very carefully and under the supervision of a pediatrician.
Suprastin, like many first generation drugs, should be taken in courses of 7 to 10 days, as it is addictive
Most often, children from 1 to 12 months are prescribed ¼ tablets 2-3 times a day, from a year to 6 years, the dosage is increased to 1/3 of a pill, from 6 to 14 years old you can give ½ a tablet at a time, after 14 years they give adult doses. For young children who do not yet know how to drink tablets, the pill must be crushed into powder before use. It can be diluted with water and given to the child with a teaspoon.
Suprastin’s tolerance is quite high, and taking this drug by children of any age does not cause any problems. Existing side effects in children over 6 years of age may manifest as drowsiness or dry mouth, sometimes impaired coordination of movements and dizziness. In infants and young children, taking suprastin, on the contrary, can cause increased excitability and even sleep disturbance. In this case, postpone the time of taking the medicine or reduce the dose of the drug in the evening, increasing it in the morning. Compared to other antihistamines, suprastin has much fewer side effects, which makes its use preferable.
