How to take a urine sample for testing in a young child? How to correctly insert the special sampling bag? Can you wear it instead of a diaper for the night? Will bedtime urine be suitable for the test? The question is answered by the drug. Anna Mitschke.
How should I correctly collect a urine sample from my baby?
Good day. My son, who is two years old, probably has cystitis. He peeing very often, with small amounts of urine, they are even droplets. He also complains that he feels a burning sensation when peeing. So I went with him to the pediatrician who referred him for urine analysis and culture. So I have to take his urine for testing. This is where the problem lies. I have never done it, because so far my son was in good health and he was not ill with anything. I bought a special urine bag at the pharmacy.
How to download with it urine for examination? How do I catch this urine? Unfortunately, I did not find out how to do it in the pharmacy. Should I put this penis pouch on my son for the night instead of a diaper? Is it together with a diaper? Should this urine for testing be from the night or could it be from a different time of day? When I was pregnant I remember that I was always told that I should collect my first urine after the night. I had to wash first and collect urine from the middle stream. Should I do that for my son too? I am asking for advice.
Your doctor will advise you on how to collect a urine sample
Collection of urine for examination especially from a young child who does not control voiding is not a simple task. The sample taken from the first morning urination is the most appropriate. However, it is not always possible to obtain it. Then we use the second portion of the child’s urine. The situation is different in the case of infants, where the timing of urine collection for testing is not important.
In infants, we collect urine immediately when the child begins to urinate, we do not wait for the middle stream of urine. We collect urine from the middle stream in children who have micturition control. It is important for a child of all ages to be properly prepared for the collection of the sample. Before taking the sample, wash the child’s perineum and genital area thoroughly. This increases the chances of obtaining reliable test results and prevents contamination of the sample. There are several ways to collect urine for testing in children who do not have voiding control.
One of them is collecting the urine into a bag. The bag is glued to the child on the previously washed and dried genital area. In girls, the area of the labia, in boys, the area of the penis. Then we put the diaper on and wait for the child to urinate into the bag. Unfortunately, this is not the best method as it often contaminates the sample with skin bacteria. Therefore, the use of bags is not recommended for collecting urine for culture. In addition, it often happens that the bag comes off and as a result it is not able to be picked up.
Much better method of collecting urine in a child is to catch it in a sterile container. Unfortunately, this method often takes time and patience from the parent. It consists in putting the child, for example, in the bathtub, in the shower and waiting for the child to start urinating. When this happens, we quickly place a sterile cup in which we will take the urine for testing. The collected urine sample should be returned to the laboratory as soon as possible. If you have any further doubts, please contact your child’s pediatrician.
