Moss on the lawn spoils the appearance of the site. It leads to yellowing and death of the lawn grass, so you need to fight with it.

Moss displaces the lawn grass from the site. It can cover the top of the lawn or run as a continuous carpet over the surface of the soil. There are 3 main reasons for its appearance: acidic soil, poor drainage, due to which water stagnates on the site, as well as low mowed lawn grass.

There are 2 ways to deal with moss:
- Physical. You can remove moss from the site manually or using a garden tool. If the plant is on the surface of the lawn, then it is enough to rake it. You can use a lawn mower. To improve the air permeability of the soil throughout the area, make small holes with a pitchfork.
- Chemical. If it was not possible to remove the moss in the first way, then proceed to the use of chemicals. Rake or manually clean the mossy cover before treating the lawn.
To prevent moss from appearing on the site again, you need to find out the reason for its growth. If the soil is acidic, be sure to treat the area with lime. The acidity of the soil should not exceed pH = 5,5. Mix lime with sand and sprinkle on the mossy cover.
If there are small depressions on the lawn, then water will accumulate in them, and this is a favorable condition for the growth of the fungus. To prevent moss from appearing on the site again, it is necessary to level the soil. This can be done using special mixtures to which you need to add sand.
Among the chemicals to choose is glyphosate-based herbicides. The active ingredient is absorbed by the leaves and transported to the roots. The moss dries up.
There are other effective remedies:
- iron or copper sulfate;
- moss soap;
- ammonium sulfate, or “dichlorophene”.
Chemicals are not advisable for lawns less than two years old. Follow directions when applying herbicides. Do not exceed the dosage as you can ruin your lawn.
When fighting moss, you can use dry or liquid products. The former should be mixed with fertilizer, such as peat. After a day, be sure to water the lawn. Spray the mossy cover with a liquid cleaner from a spray bottle or watering can.
Remember, if the lawn is in the shade, then the moss will appear regularly. In order not to constantly remove the mossy cover, it is easier to replace the lawn grass with shade-tolerant plants, such as red fescue, lungwort, fern or hosta. They will force the moss out of the area.
