Drosophila, or the well-known “wine” midge, is an uninvited, but frequent guest in any home. It is worth leaving an unfinished compote, a cut apple or other ripe fruit overnight, and in the morning you will be greeted by a whole swarm of small brown-gray flies. Where do they come from in the middle of winter, how do they enter the house through closed windows and doors, where do they disappear, deprived of food?

Drosophila belongs to the species of synanthropic insects, that is, they settle in human habitats. These midges easily enter the house through mosquito nets, fly through ventilation, their eggs are carried on clothes, shoes and even food. They can live in almost any room in the house, not only in the kitchen. Due to their small size (3 mm), their “shelter” is difficult to find.
Fruit flies prefer to hide in humid, shaded areas. Alternatively, they can live in a flower pot. Small parasites are attracted by the smell of perishable products entering the stage of decay and fermentation. As a rule, eggs are laid on the same products.
Dangers of neighborhood fruit flies
Such a neighborhood is not just undesirable for a person (from an aesthetic and hygienic point of view), it is dangerous to health. Drosophila larvae and eggs can enter human skin through clothing or ingestion. With blood, they are carried throughout the body. Larvae are capable of infecting a wide variety of tissues and organs (including the heart and brain). The complications caused by this are called miasis.
Most often, intestinal myiasis occurs, especially with low acidity of the stomach.
Some remedies to help remove fruit flies
Get rid of fruit flies immediately upon detection. The first thing to do is to deprive the flies of food: take out the trash, wash the bin, throw away any spoiled food, remove any food from the table. Since it is not easy to determine the “nesting place” of wine midges, it remains to start hunting them. Therefore, the second thing to take care of is to come up with ways to catch annoying guests. In this, the imagination of citizens is inexhaustible.
The basic principle of any trap is bait (any of the delicacies), an easy “entry” and an impossible “exit”. For example: insert a funnel made of paper into a jar with bait (fruits, beer, wine, etc.) with the narrow end inward, fix the wide part tightly around the neck. Or pull the cling film over any dish with a wide neck, fill the holes with a needle so that you can get in through them and cannot get out back.

Clearing your home of fruit flies is not so difficult. But it’s even easier to give them no chance of appearing in your home. The main and only golden rule is cleanliness and order.
