How to get rid of groundwater and dampness in the cellar
Dampness in the cellar is usually caused by the location of groundwater: if they are too close, then an urgent need to solve the problem in order to use the cellar normally at any time of the year. Also, the reasons for dampness are high humidity and lack of ventilation, which leads to the formation of mold. In this article, we will tell you how to get rid of the water in the cellar and what tools to use to eliminate dampness and mold.
Water can enter the cellar after a heavy downpour in summer or as a result of snow melting in spring, but sometimes dampness is annoying, regardless of precipitation. In any case, it is possible and necessary to deal with the problem.
How to get rid of groundwater in a cellar
There are several ways to deal with groundwater and dampness:
- perform a good drainage system;
- build a well and lower a pump into it to pump out incoming water;
- waterproof the cellar with resin, special gel or using liquid rubber.
The drainage system is equipped inside or outside. External drainage is considered more effective. For him, first, a trench is dug 40 cm in depth and width. Further, wells are drilled to the bedding of continental sand, usually they go several meters in depth. Then plastic pipes are installed, wrapped in geotextiles.
The pipes must be installed so that their top extends beyond the lower edge of the cellar wall. The drainage system is covered with earth in several layers, each of which is carefully compacted.
Drainage pipes must drain water into a specially built well.
It is usually located at the lowest point in the cellar. A pump is lowered into the well, which pumps out water when it reaches a critical point.
A more modern way to get rid of groundwater is waterproofing with liquid rubber, polymer resins and acrylate gels. These products create a seamless coating that is impervious to water.

When there is no water in the cellar, but still there is high humidity, leading to the formation of mold, it is worth using effective folk remedies:
- place containers with white moss powder in the cellar, which perfectly absorbs moisture;
- wash the walls and shelves with a weak solution of hydrochloric acid. This will help destroy molds;
- dry the air using slaked lime: place a container with the substance around the perimeter;
- use heated bricks to dry the air, which should be placed in the corners and along the walls;
- use an electric fireplace to warm up a damp area covered with mold;
- treat the walls with diesel fuel and lime whitewash. This helps in preventing mold.
It is better to immediately make the cellar so as not to think about groundwater and dampness. But if a problem has arisen, then you need to immediately eliminate it by using waterproofing materials, arranging a drainage system and using effective folk remedies for dampness.
