How to get rid of depression with electric shock

Currently, the most common treatment for depression is with medication. But it has several disadvantages: significant side effects and contraindications. Moreover, sometimes severe depression cannot be corrected with medication at all.

Therefore, back in 2002, Canadian scientists began to develop a new, therapeutic method of treatment. Its essence lies in the effect on a part of the isthmus of the cingulate gyrus – an area of the brain that is deep enough. It is this area, according to scientists, that plays an essential role in the regulation of human emotions, that is, it is associated with the development of depressive states.

To stimulate the isthmus, doctors implanted electrodes in patients through which weak pulses of electric current were passed. As a result, 12 out of 20 subjects showed a significant improvement in their condition, and seven patients showed complete recovery.

The study was published in the journal Biological Psychiatry.
