Wen (lipoma) is a benign formation that develops in the thickness of the epidermis, less often in the muscle layer, and can grow to the periosteum. It is a connective tissue capsule filled mainly with fat cells. In rare cases, the wen lacks clear boundaries and a capsule, then they talk about a diffuse lipoma. Such formations almost never degenerate into malignant tumors, but tend to gradually grow slowly. The lipoma looks like a rounded elevation above the surface of the body, can reach large sizes, when palpated, it is painless, soft and elastic, easily shifts to the side, the skin above it gathers into a fold.
Most often, wen are formed in areas of the body with a relatively thin layer of subcutaneous fatty tissue – this is the outer surface of the thighs, legs and arms, neck and shoulder girdle, lower back. Over time, the wen begins to bring physical and aesthetic discomfort. In addition, it can be injured and inflamed, and large and deep-seated formations can compress blood vessels and nerves, causing pain, swelling and movement disorders. Therefore, the wen is recommended to be removed in a hospital setting, without waiting until it increases significantly in size.
However, the same term can mean other, smaller and more problematic pathological accumulations of fat cells – for example, atheroma (sebaceous gland cyst), milium (“millet” on the face), xanthelasma (yellow plaque on the eye) or even banal acne. If such a formation is small in size, not inflamed and interferes with its owner solely as a defect in appearance, the question often arises: how to get rid of a wen on your own, at home? Do not go to the doctor for such a trifle … Let me assure you – not all wen are harmless and can be easily removed on their own, without leaving unpleasant consequences, such as an abscess, scar or relapse. So let’s figure out in which cases you can try to get rid of the wen yourself, and in which you should not do this.
Causes and some features of wen
According to the results of the research, it was not possible to accurately establish the factors contributing to the formation of wen. If we consider the lipoma, then it occurs mainly due to a hereditary metabolic failure, when the human body lacks TAG-lipase, the enzyme responsible for the breakdown of fats. Since this is a hormone-dependent enzyme, one of the leading causes of the development of lipomas can be called endocrine pathologies.
As for atheroma, which is also often called a wen, this is a sebaceous gland cyst that occurs due to blockage of the excretory duct. Excess sebum production is usually hereditary or hormonal in nature. Milia and xanthomas are the result of high blood cholesterol levels and related diseases.
So, the factors that provoke the formation of wen:
Metabolic disorders;
Endocrine pathologies;
Genetic predisposition;
kidney or liver failure;
Diseases of the digestive tract;
Improper skin care;
Neglect of personal hygiene.
Regular friction or compression of a part of the body.

Healing ointments for wen
At home, you can use therapeutic ointments aimed at dissolving or “stretching” the lipoma.
Vishnevsky ointment. The preparation with a specific smell is based on purified birch tar. As a result of the irritating effect of the ointment, the blood actively flows to the place of accumulation of fat cells, the drug also has an antiseptic effect.
Deep penetration of the active substances of the drug stimulates the removal of sebaceous secretion from the capsule to the surface of the skin. The wound heals quickly without leaving marks on the skin.
The use of Vishnevsky’s ointment – a compress under the bandage. To do this, gauze is impregnated with medicine, applied to the surface of the wen, fixed with a piece of plaster. The compress should be left in place for up to 12 hours, after a break a new bandage is formed. After a few days, the contents of the small capsule are absorbed.
Ichthyol ointment. The drug is used against skin infections, relieving inflammation and improving intercellular metabolism. The ointment promotes tissue regeneration, restores blood circulation. The method of using ichthyol ointment is lotion and rubbing into the surface of the wen.
Ointment Videstim. The basis of the drug from the group of dermatoprotectors is retinol. Videstim is effective in the treatment of eczema, skin cracks and all types of dermatitis. The ointment effectively breaks down fats, stimulates protein synthesis and keratinization of the epithelium. Regular use of the drug dries out the wen, as a result of which it disappears.
To effectively remove a wen at home, it is lightly smeared with ointment 2-3 times a day for a long time.
Balm Vitaon. The preparation is based on extracts of medicinal plants and camphor. The balm has an anti-inflammatory effect and anti-exudative action. Vitaon stimulates the removal of the wen to the outside and the rapid healing of the wound.
Within 4-5 days, Vitaon balm is applied to the surface of the wen with a thick layer, covered with a bandage on top. The compress should be changed as needed.
How to remove a wen yourself?
With self-removal of even a small formation, it is difficult to avoid pain and bleeding from an open wound. Therefore, a large wen (more than 1 cm in diameter) must be entrusted to a doctor.
Rules to be observed during manipulation:
Hands are washed with soap and disinfected with an antiseptic wipe;
The skin around the wen is disinfected with an alcohol-containing solution;
The autopsy needle must be sterile, it is better to use a disposable syringe, needle manipulation is performed with extreme caution.
Stages of removal of a wen:
Stretch the skin in the area of localization of the wen.
Puncture the upper layer of the epidermis with a needle, if necessary, duplicate the puncture at an angle of 45°.
Wipe the released blood with a swab soaked in an alcohol-containing solution.
Push out the contents of the wen capsule without pressing it with your fingers.
Apply Vishnevsky ointment, Levomekol or tetracycline ointment to the wound for disinfection and additional stretching of the contents of the capsule.
How to evaluate the results?
The swelling that appears over the wound in the first days after self-removal of the wen makes it difficult to evaluate the results of the manipulation.
Possible outcomes:
Zhirovik disappeared;
It has decreased, but has remained on a place;
The effect is zero.
In the absence of a positive result, you should not repeat the self-removal of the wen, you should resort to the help of a doctor.
Modern radical methods:
Cryotherapy – destruction using liquid nitrogen;
Electrocoagulation – cauterization of a wen;
Laser therapy – removal of a formation with a narrowly focused laser beam;
Radio wave surgery – excision of a wen with a radio knife.

They can remove small wen everywhere: on the eyelids, on the scalp, on the back, in the collar zone, in the genital area. But you need to understand that the enucleation of a large, inflamed or deeply located lipoma requires a traditional surgical operation – modern sparing techniques are powerless here.

Folk treatment of wen with baked onions. Mix a medium-sized baked onion with a tablespoon of chopped laundry soap (can be grated) until smooth. Generously moisten a gauze pad with this mixture, fix it on the skin over the wen. Change the compress 1-2 times a day, the mixture prepared for future use should be stored in a cool place. Home treatment with celandine. Apply to the tumor at night a gauze napkin moistened with a strong decoction of celandine. After a week, the wen will take the form of an abscess, on the 10th day it should open with the appearance of a curdled mass. Traces after such treatment should not remain. Removal of a wen on the face with hot oil. Recipe for removing small formations. Heat 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil to a boil, add a pinch of salt to it. Dip a cotton swab into the mixture, gently apply to the wen until you feel a slight burn. Repeat the manipulation 4 times. Carry out such a course 1 time per day. Removal of a wen on the face with the help of sheep’s wool. Soap a piece of sheep’s wool with laundry soap, apply to a wen in the form of a compress. After a while, it should open up. (Bulletin of healthy lifestyle No. 3, 2007, p. 32).
Vinegar and iodine. Mix iodine and vinegar essence in a ratio of 1: 1, gently lubricate the wen 2-3 times a day. You may have to repeat this procedure several times, the recipe is suitable for the treatment of volumetric formations. (Bulletin of healthy lifestyle No. 16, 2009, p. 10).
Effective use of Kalanchoe. Apply tampons moistened with freshly squeezed juice of a medicinal plant to the wen. Change the swab every day, wetting it with fresh juice. After 2 weeks, the skin over the tumor will soften, and its contents will begin to come out of the wen capsule. The course of treatment can take 2 months until complete recovery. A mixture of bacon with garlic. Rub the tumor with a mixture of a teaspoon of garlic juice with a tablespoon of melted lard. The frequency of use of the drug is several times a day until a complete cure. (Bulletin of healthy lifestyle No. 8, 2010, p. 24).
Massage with lamb fat. Daily rub the wen with hot lamb fat, heated in a water bath. The duration of the procedure is 10-15 minutes. The use of the golden mustache plant. Make a compress from a washed sheet of a golden mustache, cover it on top with polyethylene and cotton cloth. Treatment with bee stings. Bee stings lead to a decrease in the volume of the wen. After a month of regular apitherapy, the wen may completely disappear. (Bulletin of healthy lifestyle No. 18, 2010, p. 38).
Possible complications
Despite the apparent absence of the danger of wen, it still exists. Any unfavorable conditions, injury to the neoplasm, exposure to ultraviolet rays can lead to unwanted mutations and transformations.
A dense capsule that forms around the wen that have long existed on the body becomes an obstacle to the penetration of immune cells through it, which protect against the activity of bacterial agents. This circumstance creates a free environment for the reproduction of pathogenic bacteria. Repeated attempts to remove wen on their own lead to the same consequences. That is why it is necessary to treat wen in a medical institution in a timely manner, preventing their increase in size and inflammation.
