What should they do when the medication they need is running out?

What is an e-prescription?

An e-prescription is an electronic document that has replaced the existing paper prescription. This document can be obtained in two ways:

  1. SMS – in this case, we receive a 4-digit code in the form of an SMS message;
  2. e-mail – if we decide to send an e-mail, we will receive an e-mail to our e-mail box with an attached PDF file with information about the e-prescription.

How to safely obtain a prescription?

If we need medication in connection with the treatment of a chronic disease, the doctor may provide us with a prescription code after telephone consultation, because we are running out of the drug constantly being taken and we continue the started treatment. Then there is no need to visit the clinic, which is a great help during an epidemic.

However, the Ministry of Health emphasizes that not only chronically ill people can receive an e-prescription without leaving home. How can an e-prescription be filled?

Getting an e-prescription is very simple. As always, go to the pharmacy, where you should provide the pharmacist with your PESEL number and a 4-digit code received via SMS. We can also show the barcode on the smartphone screen that was in the PDF attachment of the e-mail. The pharmacist will scan it with a reader.

What are the advantages of an e-prescription?

An e-prescription has many advantages. First, there is no risk that the doctor’s letter on the prescription will be misread and the pharmacy will dispense the wrong drug or the wrong dosage. In addition, when we have different drugs written on one prescription, we do not have to buy all the drugs in one pharmacy and take a write-off for those drugs that are not available in a given pharmacy. In the case of an e-prescription, we can buy medicines separately for the same e-prescription.

Can I buy someone else’s e-prescription?

During an epidemic, it is worth helping people who are particularly at risk of severe COVID-19, i.e. the elderly, chronically ill and with reduced immunity, and for example, buy drugs for them using an e-prescription.

It is worth noting that each e-prescription is saved on our Internet Patient Account (IKP). Thanks to this, we can log in there at any time and check, for example, the dosage of the drug.

You will need an authorization to access IKP. The condition for the fulfillment of someone’s e-prescription is to have your own account. We are then a representative of a given person for a specified period and in the scope specified by him. All formalities can be done online, and the instructions can be found on the website patient.gov.pl.

What is IKP?

IKP is a free application of the Ministry of Health. You can check it, among others history of your medical appointments, referrals and e-prescriptions. To gain access, go to the website patient.gov.pl and log in using:
