Most people yearn for professional growth. But often the desired position bypasses us, even if we try by all means to prove to the authorities that we are worthy of promotion. How to quickly advance in professional development, says a psychologist.
When we are faced with a lack of professional growth, we need to understand that barriers in our subconscious mind prevent us from getting a promotion in most cases. Personal beliefs and a distorted perception of reality create an invisible barrier to our development.
Overcoming it is not so easy, but possible. What psychological limitations prevent us from achieving our goals? Often they look like the following beliefs:
“I deserve more!”
Many of us tend to overestimate our capabilities. But this is self-deception. It seems to us that we are at a lower level than we really deserve, so we blame our superiors and colleagues for not seeing our merits. In the end, we become disillusioned and find career advancement impossible.
“I can! I can!”
In this case, we exalt our virtues and fall into the power of pride. When we begin to believe that we have reached incredible heights, that we can do everything, we stop improving our skills and just expect to be promoted! In reality, there is always another employee who copes with work tasks better than us. It is he who receives the coveted position.
“Position at any cost”
We dream of professional growth and promotion, but we do not know how to achieve the result, and we do the wrong things. Often this barrier pushes us to intrigues in the team, “setting up” colleagues, currying favor with superiors, which, among other things, leads to a loss of business reputation.
“If I got promoted, I would move mountains”
It happens that the boss gives a subordinate a responsible task that goes beyond the direct duties of the employee. Having successfully solved a work problem, a person begins to think that he is worthy of a higher position.
So we have a false idea of our capabilities. Without realizing it, we tell others that we would have coped with larger tasks if we were promoted, but this does not happen.
“What if I can’t do it…”
This is another common barrier associated with the fear of losing energy in a new position. We’re afraid we won’t make it. We have ambitions, but also in our minds there is an attitude that changes in life can be dangerous, while we are far from always aware of this fear.
Meanwhile, the manager may read this employee’s emotion as insecurity, which is why he does not consider him as a candidate for a promotion.
How to overcome these barriers?
Once you have recognized and acknowledged your barriers, you can begin to work on removing them. First, answer yourself the question: why do I need this promotion? If only for the sake of increasing salaries, the desire to amuse your pride and prove to yourself that I am “well done” or no worse than others – perhaps this is not your position.
The promotion should bring inner satisfaction and provide an opportunity for further professional growth. At the same time, you must feel confident in your abilities and competencies in order to match the new position.
“Our life is in our hands”
You can make your dream come true if you believe that it is true. It is important to realize that often the lack of a promotion is not the fault of the boss who does not want to offer you the desired position. Maybe you’re just not ready to take responsibility.
Think about it: do you want to solve the tasks that are typical for this position, and what changes will they make in your life (maybe you will have to stay longer at work, go on business trips, and so on)?
Portrait of the ideal candidate
- Take a closer look at your boss: what qualities and character traits does he have and which ones do you lack?
- List the resources that are required for the desired position.
- Ask yourself the question: do you fit the image of the ideal candidate?
Understanding these nuances will help you get from point A to point B faster.
Analysis of skills and knowledge
When you have analyzed the psychological portrait of the ideal candidate for the position, think about what skills and knowledge he should have. Make a list of skills that you need to “pump” in the near future.
Think about what is required for this: for example, take courses, get additional education, take part in certain trainings and seminars.
But there might be a catch here. Many people regularly improve, improve their skills, but do not show themselves in the workplace, so the boss cannot appreciate their level. So we fall into the power of the “eternal student” syndrome, which prevents us from realizing ourselves professionally.
The employee does not want to take the initiative into his own hands, he is constantly learning and just waiting for the manager to mark him. But so you can not wait for anything!
It is important to realize that as long as we do not value ourselves, it will be even more difficult for others to do so.
Of course, there are situations when the best way out is to talk directly with your superiors about your prospects. And if you are not promised anything or are directly told that you will not be able to achieve a promotion in this company, perhaps you should find another job so as not to waste time and effort? Or maybe it’s time to start your own business?
Whatever the reason, remember: all barriers and limitations are in the head, and only we can overcome them.
