We all waited for summer after too long spring. And here it is, finally, June, here it is heat! We got sleeveless dresses, T-shirts and shorts … But with the onset of summer, a midge appears in Volgograd, and there is no longer any joy from the arrival of the long-awaited warmth.
Forced to disappoint: there is no truly effective means of dealing with midges. Vanilla oil and cloves, which Volgograd residents buy in large quantities, are the only natural remedies. If you decide to buy repellents, be sure to write on the bottles that they scare away midges, because mosquito repellents are powerless in this case.
And yet, in the city, midges are not as active as in nature. Fans of fishing and out-of-town recreation in general should be especially careful about protection from annoying midges.
1. Wear clothes that cover your body as much as possible – with long sleeves and pant legs. T-shirts and shorts won’t work. In addition, it is recommended to wear light-colored clothes, since dark and bright ones attract insects.
2. A midge is scared away by tobacco smoke, smoke from a fire is also suitable, but be careful with an open fire!
3. Besides vanilla and clove scent, you can also use tea tree and cedarwood oil.
4. Pour 100% eucalyptus extract into a spray bottle. It is good for a person, and harm for pests.
WDay.ru asked Volgograd residents how they escape from the bites of these small insects.
Tatiana Sveshnikova, sling consultant:
– We save ourselves by the usual means that are sold in stores and pharmacies. Children are not allergic, so there are no problems. Until a year, I don’t put anything on my child’s skin, only on clothes, a stroller and a sling (if we are in a sling). After a year, it is already possible to apply it to the skin.
Anna Smirnova, PR Manager:
– June in Volgograd turns into a real horror movie where the main villain is a midge. As the main character of this film, I found salvation in the form of clove oil, which all villains are afraid of like fire!
Diana Odintsova, photographer:
– I wear a cap, long sleeves and jeans when I have to shoot. So I go. It’s good that there is no heat.
Midges differ from mosquitoes in that they do not pierce the skin like mosquitoes, but bite off pieces from its surface, so redness, swelling appear at the site of the bite, and an allergic reaction may begin. If you have been bitten by a midge, the following remedies are suitable:
1. Immediately rinse the bite site with clean water and treat with a solution of alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
2. Apply ice or cold compress. This will clear up the swelling. The main thing is not to comb the bite site, otherwise an infection may get into the wound.
3. An effective remedy is a soda compress. Dissolve 1 teaspoon in 200 ml of water, soak cotton wool in the solution and apply to the bite site for 10-15 minutes.
4. They say that a compress made from raw potatoes, grated or cut into slices, helps.
5. Balm “Golden Star” relieves itching. But you need to be careful if a midge has bitten in the eye, especially a child.
6. Antihistamines will help to cope with an allergic reaction.
By the way, this year Volgograd residents face not one, but two waves of the midge invasion. This will happen due to the extension of the discharge at the Volzhskaya HPP until June 10. This trouble will end by the end of the month. Unfortunately, treatments for midges in the city and on water bodies are not carried out. It is believed that midges, unlike mosquitoes, are not a carrier of infectious diseases, and therefore, residents of Volgograd and the region are able to cope with this scourge. This means that you will have to stock up not only with improvised means, but also with patience.
