How to equip a workplace at home

In order to arrange a comfortable working office, it is not necessary to allocate an entire office for yourself. You can organize your office in any part of the house, but you need to know a few basic rules. We asked experts to share topical tips to make setting up your workplace a breeze.

If the apartment does not have a separate room, a workplace can be created in almost any corner of the room, in the bedroom and even in the kitchen. To visually highlight the working area, paint the walls with a different paint or paste on wallpaper that will differ from the basic design of the apartment.

“If the colors in the main space are calm, then you can make an accent wall – for example, stick on wallpaper with floral patterns. At the same time, do not forget about the influence of color on the emotional state. Blue will help you calm down and concentrate, green will increase productivity and creativity. But brown shades in the work area should be avoided: the color of the earth does not set you up for work at all. You can also visually zone the space with the help of a mobile functional decor, which can be mounted on the wall, placed next to the working area, or laid on the table. To designate the work area, you can hang a shelf for work accessories or a chalk board for writing, “- comments the interior designer of the online consumer services YouDo.com Nayla Rumyantseva.

Organize your work area so that you do not have to go to the next room for a reference. Place next to the table a shelf for books, document holders, a tablet, pencils and other tools that you use in your work. Always put items in the same place so you don’t have to search for them.

“A good solution in a small apartment would be the shelves located above the desk up to the ceiling. You can place folders and tools on them without eating up space, ”advises Nayla.

Place everything you need close at hand

Organize your space so that you don’t have to be distracted from work and spend a lot of time looking for a charger for your phone. Place a wastepaper basket, power outlets and extension cords, a USB hub, and headphones by your desk to help you stay focused if you are not alone or have neighbors renovating.

Consider the ergonomics of the workplace

First of all, you should be comfortable at your desk.

“When planning your workplace, consider the location of your monitor. It is important that you feel comfortable using it all day long. If in the evening the sun’s rays shine directly into the screen, but there is no other way to place the desktop, hang roller blinds or blackout curtains, ”Nayla recommends.

Mobility is an important factor in organizing work space at home. If you want to periodically “hide” your work area, you can use folding or pull-out tables near the closet or wall. This will save space and use the same room for different purposes. During the day it can be your office, and in the evening it can be a cozy and spacious bedroom where you will watch a movie with your husband or boyfriend.

Lighting is one of the most important factors affecting productivity. People who work near a window sleep 46 minutes longer. Daylight improves efficiency, so try to place your desk by the window. And if the layout of the apartment does not allow this, consider lighting. With the right light, your eyes will be less stressed and you will be less tired.

“There is a lack of light in many rooms. But do not forget that there should always be enough light for both effective work and health. Use cool lighting during the day to reduce sleepiness and help you concentrate. But keep in mind that this kind of light is harmful in the evening, so don’t stay up late at work and turn on your desk lamp, ”warns Nayla.

With an anatomical chair, you do not have to look for an excuse to urgently look into the refrigerator or into the next room. Observe yourself: you may just be uncomfortable sitting.

A comfortable chair will help you stay focused and finish work faster. If the design of the anatomical chair seems rough and it does not fit into the interior of the apartment at all, choose the right chair, and to reduce the load, use an orthopedic back pillow. But no matter how good the chair is, remember to get up and warm up periodically.

The home workplace should be complete. If you are used to writing down tasks and seeing them in front of you, place a cork or slate board above the table. Over time, your mind map will become a full-fledged decorative element.

Are you used to keeping live plants on your desktop? And you are doing the right thing. They are not only a great decoration, but they also release oxygen, which is so important for mental activity. Employees who keep a potted flower on their desk are 15% more likely to come up with good ideas and solutions than those who don’t.

Use scents to tune in to a working mood. Lavender relieves stress and helps control emotions, lemon helps to concentrate, and mint stimulates thinking. Light a mint scented candle when you have difficult negotiations.

When you work remotely, you are still at home and you can safely put a toy Totoro or your favorite Barbie on the table without fear of ridicule from colleagues. Surround yourself with decor items that inspire you. But do not overdo it – if there is too much decor on the table, then it will start to interfere.

Unlike an office, you design your home workplace yourself. Organize it so that you enjoy being there.
