Martini Fiero (Martini Fiero) is a red orange vermouth with a strength of 15% by volume, one of the latest developments of the Italian company Martini & Rossi. The company positions the drink as a modern take on vermouth and addresses the product to a youth audience – this is evidenced by the bright taste and elegant design of the bottle. At the same time, it has already been noted that the best character of “Martini Fiero” is revealed in cocktails with tonic and champagne (sparkling wine).
Historical information
Vermouth “Martini Fiero” became known to the general European public on March 28, 2019, on this day it appeared on the shelves of British supermarkets Asda and Osado. The drink instantly became a bestseller. Prior to this, the Martini Fiero was only available in the Benelux since 1998.
Fiero in Italian means “proud”, “fearless”, “strong”.
The launch of the new line was the most significant event in the history of the company over the past ten years. Winemakers managed to attract a record amount of investments – investors invested more than 2,6 million US dollars in the work on a new brand.
Spices and herbal ingredients for the new Martini Fiero were selected by master herbalist Ivano Tonutti, the author of the recipe for the famous Bombay Sapphire gin. He is the eighth herbalist who has ever worked at Martini & Rossi, and Tonutti is also aware of the company’s secret recipes for vermouth. In response to numerous questions from journalists, Tonutto claims that information about the ingredients is stored in Switzerland under seven locks.
How serious this allegation is remains unknown. However, strict secrecy was observed during the creation of the Martini Fiero. Ivano Tonutti said that working on the drink was a real challenge for him, as it was necessary to get a really delicate, fresh and at the same time perfectly balanced taste. The complexity of the task was the need to combine bright citrus notes with the bitterness of wormwood and cinchona shades of tonic. The master herbalist was assisted in his work by chief blender Beppe Musso.
It is known that Martini Fiero contains fortified white wines from Piedmontese grapes, a mixture of herbs from the Italian Alps, including sage and wormwood, as well as oranges from the Spanish city of Murcia, known for its citrus fruits with an original bittersweet taste. Vermouth was created for young people, so it was originally assumed that the bright fragrant Martini Fiero should become one of the components of cocktails in demand among the audience.
How to drink “Martini Fiero”
Vermouth “Fiero” belongs to the category of long aperitifs, in its pure form it is desirable to serve it chilled or with ice. Salty and spicy dishes enhance the refreshing fruity bouquet, so olives, olives, jerky and parmesan cheese are the perfect starter. If desired, you can prepare a salad from the ingredients and season it with a little olive oil.
Martini Fiero can be diluted with orange, cherry or grapefruit juice. In the latter case, a strong bitterness will appear.
The manufacturer recommends mixing Martini Fiero with tonic in equal proportions. Officially, the cocktail is called Martini Fiero & Tonic and it must be prepared directly in a balloon-type glass (on a high leg with a rounded bowl narrowed towards the top). Tonic smooths out the cloying vermouth and complements its citrus tones with hints of quinine.

In supermarkets, you can find a branded set for making a classic cocktail, which, according to tradition, the Martini company released simultaneously with the new vermouth. The set includes a 0,75L Martini Fiero bottle, two cans of San Pellegrino tonic and a branded rounded mixing glass. Drinks are packaged in a smart box with a cocktail recipe written on it. Separately, you will need to buy only oranges. Sometimes in the kit instead of San Pellegrino there is a Schweppes tonic and there is no glass.
Almost simultaneously with the Martini Fiero vermouth, ready-made branded cocktails in bottles appeared. An aperitif with Tonic Bianco is usually eaten with focaccia with rosemary, feta or hummus. The bright scarlet Martini Fiero & Tonic is designed specifically for picnics and outdoor recreation. The drink serves as an addition to Italian dishes – fried zucchini with herbs, pizza and arancini – rice balls baked to a golden color.
Other cocktails with Martini Fiero
Vermouth gives an interesting taste to the citrus cocktail Garibaldi, where Fiero serves as a substitute for Kampari. Fill a tall glass goblet with ice cubes (200 g), mix 50 ml Martini Fiero with orange juice (150 ml), garnish with zest.
You can try to combine “Martini Fiero” with champagne. In this case, branded Prosecco is suitable. Fill a little more than half of a spherical glass with ice cubes, add 100 ml of vermouth and sparkling wine, pour in 15 ml of freshly squeezed orange juice. Serve with a slice of orange tucked into the rim of the glass.
