The combination of chocolate and tequila seems unusual only to a person unfamiliar with the gastronomic traditions of Mexico. A hot drink made from cocoa beans with the addition of national alcohol and jalapeno peppers is often found on the menu of Mexican cafes and restaurants. Olmeca was the first company to launch the production of chocolate tequila on an industrial scale, then the recipe was adopted by other manufacturers. In Russia, the drink is in demand among youth and women due to its mild taste with hints of agave and dark chocolate.
Historical information
The predecessor of the Olmeca brand was the old distillery Destileria Colonial, which has been producing tequila since 1873. The distillery was located in the city of Tequila – the heart of the Jalisco region, where the soil and climate are most favorable for growing blue agave. The distillery’s products were not widely known, but the situation changed in 1967, when a small distillery was acquired by the Canadian holding Seagram. With the growing popularity of tequila in Europe and the USA, production volumes ceased to satisfy the company, so the management decided to build a new production site in the city of Arandos (Los Altos, Jalisco).
The change in the location of the plant had the best effect on the quality of drinks – the region is located in the foothills, where the volcanic soil is especially rich in minerals. The distillery occupies a plot of 56 hectares, on the territory there is a source of water with a low hydrogen content, which favorably affects the fermentation process. The distillery is designed according to the old model, but at the same time uses the most modern equipment in its work. The first batch of tequila was bottled at the enterprise in 1997.
The manufacturer produces premium types of national drink with a rich taste, dominated by lemon, mint and pepper shades. Chocolate tequila is the only unusual type of alcohol in the assortment of the enterprise, the rest of the products are made strictly according to the classical technology.
It is believed that Olmeca Dark Chocolate was the result of the company’s attempts to establish the production of dessert alcohol, but only a drink based on cocoa beans turned out to be successful. In 2013, the brand won a bronze medal at the International Spirits Challenge. Now the brand belongs to the French holding Pernod Ricard.
Other brands of chocolate tequila
Chocolate-based tequila is produced by Tanteo, a Mexican company owned and run by a team of agave farmers. The manufacturer specializes in craft and produces drinks infused with jalapeno, chipotle and habanero. The distillery does not use maceration and adds pepper and cocoa beans directly to the barrel during aging, which gives the drinks a natural taste and aroma.
Pochteca Chocolate Licors Tequila is a tequila-based flavored liqueur from Global Spirits Imports, based in the state of Jalisco. The range of the manufacturer includes products with different flavors, including blackberry, raspberry, peach, pomegranate and coffee. The entire line is designed for mixes. The taste of chocolate tequila is given with the help of natural flavors – cocoa beans are macerated in an alcohol mixture and added to the finished drink.
How to drink chocolate tequila
Dessert tequila is drunk neat and mixed in cocktails. The drink has a silky texture and aroma with hints of fruit, cocoa, vanilla and nuts. Despite the high strength, chocolate tequila is easy to drink and leaves a spicy aftertaste.
Before drinking in its pure form, the bottle must be properly cooled along with the shots and drunk from small glasses in one gulp.
Chocolate tequila goes well with citrus, coffee and currant liqueurs, as well as vanilla-infused vodka. The recommended mixing ratio is 1:1.
