Children often get hurt while playing. Scratched elbows and knees are every parent’s day-to-day. However, some skin wounds require appropriate dressing and treatment. Only in this way the wound will not open, posing a threat to the child, who may infect it while playing, for example by soiling it with earth. A poorly dressed wound in a child can also cause discomfort and pain when, for example, the dressing comes off with scab and skin when changing. Such problems can be avoided by learning how to dress wounds properly.

The art of dressing skin wounds

Wounded skin care is extremely demanding. Depending on the type of injury, other methods of dressing the skin should be taken. Each type of dressing is used in a different way. We only use sterile dressings to cover wounds. Do not apply gauze or directly a bandage or other materials that could stick to the wound, and do not disturb the already repaired place when removing it.

How to deal with various cuts?

For an ordinary cut or minor wound caused during play, the first step is always to wash and clean the wound. First, let’s wash the wound in soapy water. Then hydrogen peroxide or iodine can be used. Remember that iodine must not be used directly on the wound, but only around it.

Then put a sterile dressing on the wound, and bandage the whole thing in such a way as not to put too much pressure on the child’s hand or leg, but also so that the dressing does not fall off by itself during further play.

Other wounds – what to remember!

  • Deep wounds after accidents should be dressed and bandaged immediately. Such wounds are not washed with home remedies
  • Broken openings should also be bandaged immediately to stop the blood. However, do not wash them, you should immediately call an ambulance
  • If a foreign body becomes stuck in the wound, it must not be removed or moved. The dressing should be applied in such a way as to stabilize the foreign body in the body. Then take your child to the emergency room right away
  • In the case of massive hemorrhages, a compression dressing should be used, which should help to stop the bleeding

Calming the child

It is very important to keep the baby calm while dressing the baby. First of all, in this way we will avoid any trauma related to the cut itself, wound dressing or pain associated with the use of, for example, hydrogen peroxide. Let’s explain to the child exactly what happened and what we need to do at each step of dressing the wound. Then let’s promise something that the child will be waiting for: sweets, ice cream, or having fun together. Let’s assure the child about how brave, responsible and how proud we are that he can control his emotions.
