How to distinguish a boy’s chinchilla from a girl

When choosing an adorable pet, you need to understand exactly who you are bringing into the house. The sex of the animal is important for the owner who decides to keep a married couple at home. The chinchilla boy is unlikely to be happy with another male. The chinchilla girl will do the same. And when the couple has babies, the owner will also have to differentiate them by gender.

How to distinguish a chinchilla-boy from a chinchilla-girl

Chinchillas willingly play the role of pets. Native to South America, these fluffy rodents live a very long time. Unlike their small relatives – hamsters, chinchillas live up to 20 years. This is why the question of the sex of the pet is of particular importance.

A boy chinchilla differs from a girl in the location of the genitals and behavior.

The only way to determine the sex of an animal that has not reached puberty is to study the location of its reproductive organs. Up to three to four months of life, the differences between females and males are only in the distance between the penis / anus in the boy or the vagina / anus in the girl.

You can find out who you are holding in your hands like this:

  • if the distance between the indicated organs is 3 mm or more, this is a boy;
  • if the organs are located almost without any gap, it is a girl.

To make it clearer, you can compare the animals. Gradually, the difference between the structure of the genitals of males and females will become more and more obvious. And at about 4 months. in boys, under the tail, you can already see the emerging testicles – a secondary sex characteristic. Starting from 7 months. the testicles are already so large that it is simply impossible to confuse the male and the female when comparing two opposite-sex animals.

Tame chinchillas will allow you to examine yourself, but still you need to do this only when the animal is full, satisfied, in a good mood. Lift the tail gently so as not to hurt the pet, and after examination, be sure to please with something tasty.

Other differences between chinchilla-boy and chinchilla-girl

You can also distinguish a boy from a girl by other signs. For example, the physical characteristics and behavior of males and females are different:

  • females are larger and 100 g heavier than males;
  • the weight of girls reaches 800 g, while boys do not grow heavier than 700 g;
  • females are more active, brave, tend to dominate the pair.

In addition, girls are capable of being jealous. For example, they are very offended when the owner first picks up the male. Resentment is expressed in a completely understandable human body language: the chinchilla girl turns away and pretends that everything that happens does not interest her.

You can distinguish a male chinchilla from a female at an early age by the distance between the penis and the anus. The older the pets get, the easier it is to find the differences between heterosexual rodents.
