Modern refrigerators are equipped with the No Frost system, so defrosting is rarely needed. In drip systems, ice and snow freeze in the chambers more often – this is the principle of their work. Also, the cause of the formation of a “fur coat” may be a malfunction. In any case, you need to know how to defrost the refrigerator according to all the rules.
Why remove ice from the chamber
Do I need to defrost the refrigerator? He needs to thaw, especially if you have a drip system. During operation, ice and snow freeze on the walls – this interferes with the normal operation of the device, heat transfer is disturbed and the temperature in the chamber rises. As a result, the compressor wears out, trying to reach the specified values.
What are the reasons for the formation of ice:
- Warm air enters. This happens when the door seal is deformed or due to subsidence of the fastening loops.
- Do you put hot food on the shelves?. This is a misuse of technology. Hot dishes form condensation, which turns into ice on the walls.
- You overflow the chamber, the air can not circulate and cool normally.
- Thermal sensor broken, informing the board about the temperature in the chamber. The module does not receive a signal, therefore it does not give a command to turn off the motor. The latter freezes without stopping, which leads to an increase in snow.
- Heating element or defrost timer in systems with No Frost is faulty. Therefore, the defrost does not work.
- Refrigerant leak. As a result of corrosion, the circuit is damaged, and the gas begins to escape. It is not enough for normal cooling, so the compressor runs non-stop.
Is it possible to defrost the No Frost refrigerator
Despite the fact that during operation, the defrost is automatic, the equipment must be turned off and washed. It doesn’t matter if it’s built-in or freestanding. Any brand – Daewoo, Bosch, LG – requires proper care.
The formation of a snow “coat” on the walls:
- Difficulty accessing products.
- When the doors are opened, the snow begins to melt, drops drip onto the floor and onto the lower chamber, which leads to corrosion.
- Pieces of food remain in the frozen part, which leads to the development of bacteria during defrosting and spoilage of products.
Defrosting allows you to maintain hygiene in the compartment, store food properly and ensure normal heat exchange.
How often do you need to turn off the refrigerator “Indesit”, “Atlant”, “Samsung”, “Bosch”? It is necessary to give the opportunity to thaw models with a drip installation once every six months.
How many times a year should you turn off No Frost or NatureCool appliances? At least once a year.
You can defrost without turning off the refrigerator if it is a two-compressor. One camera turns off independently of the other.
Preparing, shutting down and cleaning the refrigerator
Before starting work, pay attention to the ambient temperature. If the room is too hot and stuffy, it is better to wait for cooler days. The fact is that it will be difficult for the compressor to reach the set temperature after shutdown.
Before removing the food, press the defrost button or turn the temperature switch to a low value. When everything is taken out, check where the water flows. Substitute containers to collect liquid if the compartment does not have a drip tray.
How to save products? Food preparations can be taken out to the balcony in winter. In the summer, transfer everything with frozen meat in a saucepan, wrap in thick paper and cover with a towel.
In stores you can buy special thermal bags. They will save your products by the time the equipment is turned on.
Remove all shelves, grates, containers from the compartment. Place a towel under the body. Open the door ajar.
The minimum defrosting time is three to twelve hours. But it is best to leave the equipment overnight. How much to defrost equipment depends on the amount of frozen ice and system wear.
Make sure that the two-chamber refrigerator normally removes moisture from the system. If the drain hole is clogged, clean it with a special brush.
How to quickly defrost: instructions
There is no time to wait until all the ice comes off the walls of the Stinol, Liebherr, Ariston refrigerator? Then use the tricks that helped users of our site to quickly cope with the task:
Defrosting with hot water. Boil water, pour into a metal bowl, place in the chamber on a wooden board. Close the compartment door and wait about 20 minutes. Once the water has cooled, refill the bowl with hot water. This will help the ice inside to thaw quickly.
You can speed up the process in the Biryusa, Veko, Saratov, Electrolux units with a hair dryer. But remember that hot blowing can melt the plastic on the camera, so try to avoid this method. If you still decide, make sure that the air flow is cool or slightly warm. Send the broken pieces of snow to the sink.
Fan or heater. Dry warm air will help speed up the process. Install the appliance at the level of the middle shelves and leave it for at least an hour until the “lumps” come off the walls.
Attention! Masters categorically do not advise using this defrosting method for safety reasons.
Use liquid or spray to defrost. Manufacturers have developed special tools for manual cleaning of ice. It is enough to spray the walls, wait for the defrost and wipe the walls with clean water.
How not to damage equipment
Regardless of the type of refrigerator – built-in or freestanding – defrosting should take place by itself. You can not use physical effort and remove the ice with foreign objects. So you can break through the wall, which will lead to a violation of thermal insulation and breakage, or damage the circuit. Then a refrigerant leak will begin and you can’t do without a master.

Washing and cleaning
All snow has been removed. How to wash the walls after defrosting?
- First remove the bowls of water and drain it from the pan.
- The automatic system in the Vestfrost, Whirlpool, Nord refrigerators only allows you to wipe the shelves and internal parts. But it is best to wash the components separately.
Do not use abrasive powders or rough sponges for cleaning – damage the surface. Use soft cloths and liquid detergents.
- Often left in old refrigerators bad smell in the chamber. For washing, it is enough to dilute a part of soda and salt in water and wash all surfaces. Liquid gels and soap solutions are also used.
- If mold has appeared on the seal, wiping with ammonia will help eliminate it. According to SanPiN, mold cannot come into contact with food.
- Wash shelves, grates and trays with soapy water.
- Wipe surfaces thoroughly with a dry cloth. Don’t forget the body. Ice in between compartments can lead to corrosion. Wipe the floor near the refrigerator.
How to turn on the equipment after washing
Leave the compartments open for at least one hour. Then close the doors, connect the refrigerator to the mains and set the optimum temperature on the panel or regulator. Let it idle for 1-2 hours until it reaches the desired performance. Then download the products.
Sometimes during loading, the temperature rise sensor may be triggered. This is fine. The sensor will turn off after 20-30 minutes.
