Paulina Wójtowicz, MedTvoiLokony: How to deal with brain fog?

Bożena Adamkiewicz, MD, PhD: First of all, start to lead a hygienic lifestyle: avoid stimulants, alcohol, cigarettes, eating at night. Healthy, regular sleep is absolutely essential. It is worth taking care of a varied, vitamin-rich diet – the Mediterranean diet works great, which is recommended in the prevention of stroke, heart attack and also in the case of this type of disorder.

Of course, memory exercises have a very good effect. If, despite the implementation of these healthy habits, symptoms persist, constant supervision is necessary in specialized neurological, psychological or psychiatric clinics, depending on the dominant symptoms present.

Mental exercises can also be a form of prevention of dementia?

Yes, it is. Cognitive functions need to be trained. I do it every day. The MSc in physiotherapy working at our Center has prepared a monograph for patients suffering, among others, from multiple sclerosis and for their families, in which she proposes various simple ways how not to fall into the so-called routine and exercise the mind. Everyone should try to apply them.

What are these ways?

Everything that leads to a change in everyday habits, so, for example: choosing a different route than usual to get to work, brushing your teeth with your left or right hand, depending on which one is dominant, dressing with your eyes closed, focusing on different senses: taste, sight, hearing while eating a meal. These are really simple exercises. In addition, you need to read as much as possible, and not just sit in front of the screen and be a passive recipient of information that floods us from every side. The brain is lazy. When he learns something, he stops wanting. So the point is to constantly challenge him or her.

Pocovid fog patients want to get vaccinated?

Many are afraid of it. But it must be said clearly: any cognitive impairment after COVID-19 is not a contraindication for vaccination. I recommend them to patients. Vaccination is not intended to worsen your health, but to prevent you from getting sick. Therefore, the fear of vaccination is a serious problem that we must solve through conversation, because the prevention of serious consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection, especially pulmonary or cardiological complications, is the most important here.
