Are there proven and safe ways to do so?
I have been suffering from Hashimoto’s disease for several years, and one of the symptoms is overweight, which I cannot deal with. I am still gaining weight even though I am trying to eat little. How can I get rid of unnecessary kilograms or at least inhibit further weight gain?
In this case, appropriate treatment should be implemented, combining pharmacotherapy with an appropriate diet. The diet must be prepared by a dietician and selected individually to the needs of the body and the stage of the disease. A slimming diet should not be very restrictive, because the metabolic rate may slow down even more.
Remember to eat regularly. Meals should be eaten every 3-4 hours, with no snacks in between. The body then has time to use the energy and does not put anything back as it is used to receiving this energy at regular intervals. When composing a diet for Hashimoto’s patients, it is very important to make it as varied as possible. The menu should be rich in products that provide all the nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. The main source of protein in the diet should be animal products, i.e. meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, the source of carbohydrates – whole grain products, and vitamins and minerals – vegetables and fruits.
In the diet of my patients, I limit the consumption of saturated fatty acids, present in animal products, and increase the unsaturated fatty acids, which are found in oils (e.g. cold pressed rapeseed, olive oil), nuts and fish, which also contributes to weight reduction .
It is necessary to ensure adequate hydration of the body. During the day, you should consume 1,5-2 liters of fluids, preferably water, herbal and fruit teas. If their consumption is lower than recommended, the body will store this water, which will result in swelling of the arms and legs. Each liter of water weighs about one kilogram, so the water retained in the body means additional kilograms on the weight.
A very important element in the fight against excess weight is physical activity. Moderate and regular physical activity 2-3 times a week is recommended. It should be adapted to the current state of health. Extreme sports and prolonged physical exertion with high loads and intensity are not recommended, as they may exacerbate the disease through physical stress.
