What are the symptoms of laryngitis? Why does inflammation develop? Is antibiotic administration necessary? Are there any natural treatments for infections? The question is answered by the drug. Paweł Żmuda-Trzebiatowski.

How is laryngitis treated in a child?

Hello, I am a mother of two children. One of them (son) is three years old and goes to kindergarten, the other one, the daughter is 5 months old. Due to the fact that the son attends kindergarten, he often brings home various diseases (colds, Boston, bowel). Today I received information from the facility that children have laryngitis in the kindergarten.

It worried me a lot, the more that I had not encountered this disease before. I would like to know what they are symptoms of laryngitis and what could be its causes. But most of all, how can it be treated laryngitis in a child. I am very afraid that my son, like the other children, will be sick, the more so as his immunity is significantly reduced after the last infection. So I would like, if necessary, to prepare for the treatment of laryngitis in a child.

I would like to add that we are a family that uses antibiotics as a last resort, is it necessary in this case? Can laryngitis be cured with natural and home remedies? Or maybe laryngitis can be cured with homeopathy? What helps to cure it? I am asking for feedback.

The doctor explains how to treat a child’s laryngitis

Madam, laryngitis most often it is a viral rather than a bacterial disease, so treatment is generally symptomatic. In children, especially at such a young age, we are afraid subglottic laryngitis, due to the fact that in children the subglottal cavity is very narrow and any infection with laryngeal edema is manifested by severe breathlessness that can be life-threatening. In such a situation, it is urgent to go to the hospital.

Laryngitis is manifested by hoarseness, shortness of breath, altered voice timbre, fever or cough. As I wrote above, the treatment is symptomatic, so drugs are administered to eliminate specific symptoms, for example, antitussive, antipyretic or anti-inflammatory drugs. Adequate hydration is very important. Adults and children alike should drink plenty of fluids while they are ill. In some cases of laryngitis, your doctor may recommend a nebuliser steroid.

First of all, it is used in the case of a strong barking cough with shortness of breath. If you have chronic laryngitis unresponsive to symptomatic treatment, your doctor may recommend antibiotics. Of course, this only applies in situations where a bacterial infection is suspected.

You are asking about natural home treatments and homeopathy. It is a pity that you did not write exactly what treatment it is about. Using homemade onion syrups or tea with honey or lemon, of course, can help.

However, I warn you against using herbs of unknown origin, which supposedly have wonderful healing properties. Such preparations can do more harm than good. The same goes for homeopathy. Personally, I am against this method of “treatment” because in my opinion it is inconsistent with medical knowledge and generally speaking it does not work.

In the case of viral infections, time is of the essence in treatment. Eventually the symptoms will begin to improve and the baby will recover. It’s always a good idea to contact your pediatrician rather than self-medicate.
