How to connect the engine from an old washing machine – instructions

A working engine from an old washing machine is always useful on the farm. If connected correctly, it can be used as a driving force for a grinder, lawn mower, juicer. Therefore, do not rush to throw away old equipment, it will still serve you.

You will learn what types of motors are and how to properly connect them to appliances.

Types of SMA motors

According to the type of design, washing machine motors are divided into three types:

  • Asynchronous. It consists of a stator and a rotor, it works due to the magnetic field that is formed during rotation. The advantages of this type are the simplicity of design, which makes it easy to replace worn parts, as well as silent operation. The disadvantages include low efficiency and large size.
  • Collector. Belongs to a more modern type. The design contains electric brushes, which, in contact with the motor rotor, transmit electrical energy to it. Small size and high power are the main advantages of the collector motor. However, due to constant friction, the brushes and commutator wear out quickly.
  • Inverter. The driveless motor is attached directly to the drum of the washing machine. It also consists of a stator and a rotor, but it is more compact. Powerful motor runs silently. The only drawback is the high cost of machines that are equipped with an inverter motor.

As part of the article, we will talk about connecting the engine from old washers, which were equipped with asynchronous electric motors. You can also connect the motor to a new washing machine if it breaks down.

Dismantling the asynchronous motor

To pull out the motor, remove the back wall of the washer by unscrewing the screws around the perimeter. With the panel aside, find the motor at the bottom under the tank. Disconnect the wiring and unscrew the bolts on which the device is mounted. Having pulled the engine out of the body of the machine, you can start connecting it.

Correct connection with your own hands

Connecting an old type motor is somewhat more difficult. Since in the collector type you can navigate by the color of the wires, and in the asynchronous one you will have to ring each output.

Armed with a multimeter, ring each wire in turn to find the starting winding. You need to find paired wires that will show the same resistance. Write down all the indicators, in the future they will need to be compared.

After ringing both windings and writing down the indicators, compare them. At the working winding (OV), the resistance will be less than that of the starting winding (PO). It is not recommended to connect this motor through a capacitor, as it can damage the motor.

  • Fasten the starting winding wire with the working winding wire.
  • Connect them to an AC power source as shown in the diagram.
  • One start wire must be hooked to the start button, the contact of which is not fixed. In the diagram, it is indicated by the letters SB.

If, after starting the engine, you find that it rotates in the wrong direction, swap the wires from the starting winding, then it will rotate in the other direction.

Why does the motor heat up when turned on

It is recommended that before you connect the motor and give it a second life, check all its details. So, if the bearing has become unusable or clogged with dirt, this leads to friction between the rotor and the stator.

If you decide to connect the motor through a capacitor, most likely its capacity is too large. Therefore, it is better to connect without a capacitor, as this can lead to motor burnout.
