How to connect the drain of the dishwasher to the sewer

Decided to fill the kitchen with household appliances? Please note that the dishwasher fills and drains water, which means that it needs the correct connection. You will learn how to properly connect the dishwasher to the sewer and what tools you will need in our publication.

PMM selection and connection features

Before buying a dishwasher, you should determine the location of its installation. Will it be built into an old or new kitchen set? When ordering new furniture, a niche for a dishwasher is provided in advance, taking into account its parameters. But if the kitchen is already ready, then it is better to choose a place closer to the sink. Why is installation far from the drain undesirable? Here are some facts:

  1. Too much distance will put a heavy load on the drain pump. This will lead to rapid wear of parts and damage to the pump.
  2. You will need a hose extension, since the elements that come with the kit are quite short in length.

Some users advise how to make the task easier. For example, lower the drain hose into the sink. But we do not recommend doing this for the following reasons:

  • you will have to constantly clean the sink of grease and pieces of food that fall into the drain after washing the dishes;
  • an unpleasant smell in the kitchen is provided;
  • a highly located hose increases the load on the pump;
  • it is unsafe: if the hose slips, the flood is guaranteed; in addition, the leakage protection may not work, since the tightness is broken.

We recommend organizing a drain connection to the sewer. How to do it right, we will now tell.

Preparing for installation

First, decide on the connection diagram. There are two options:

  1. Through a siphon using a tee.
  2. Directly to the sewer.

If the dishwasher will be located far from the sink, then consider the piping layout: so that it has as few turns or bends as possible. Make sure that the diameter of the pipes is not less than the diameter of the hose, which will allow easy connection.

What tools and parts will be needed

If you will connect the drain through the waste siphon, then choose a part with two or three drains (tee) to connect the washing machine and dishwasher. How to choose the right siphon, read our article.

Also you need:

  • non-return valve – it will not allow water to flow back into the machine in case of a sewer blockage;
  • clamps, gaskets.

Tools:

  • open-end wrench;
  • building level;
  • fum-tape for waterproofing.

Prepare a place to install the dishwasher: move the headset or convert the cabinet. To do this, remove the door from the hinges, remove all the shelves. Remove the back wall as well.

You can start installing and connecting equipment.

Connection stages

Before installing the machine in a cabinet, connect all hoses and secure the connections. Put the device in place and do the rest of the work.

How to organize a drain through a siphon:

  1. Dismantle the old one and install a new siphon, which is suitable for the dishwasher and washing machine.
  2. Remove the plug from the hose and screw on the drain valve (check valve).
  3. Wrap fum-tape around the siphon thread for tightness.
  4. Bend the hose into a siphon shape, it should be no higher than 60 cm from the floor (drain height).
  5. Connect the end of the hose to the siphon.

Sewer connection:

  1. Install the hose in a curved position (letter U), at least 40 cm from the floor.
  2. Connect one end to the dishwasher, the other to the sewer. Don’t forget to build in a non-return valve to prevent drains from entering the machine.

Now you know which drain is needed for the dishwasher. Next, take on the organization of water supply. At the end of the work, perform a test run to make sure there are no leaks. Video on the topic will help you:
