How to collect urine for analysis from an infant? Video
Such a simple procedure as taking tests can take a long time if you need to take urine for analysis from newborns. Toddlers cannot write to order, and in general they do not yet understand what their parents want from them.
Urine collection bag: rules of use
The easiest way to collect urine from a newborn is to purchase a special sterile sachet. They are sold in pharmacies. Take two at once, because the first time may not work. Urine from an infant is collected like this:
- the genitals are washed with warm water and baby soap
- a bag for collecting urine is glued on (with boys everything is easier, the penis is placed in the bag as a whole, along with the testicles. The bag is held tightly, urine does not spill)
- the child is kept upright until he pees
- the package is carefully peeled off, the urine is poured into a sterile jar
Do not leave the urine collection bag overnight. A newborn pee every 3-4 hours and the bag will collect too much urine. With such a mixture, doctors will not be able to make a correct diagnosis.
To speed up the process of collecting urine from your baby, drink it after you glue the bag on. After 15 minutes, maximum after half an hour, the urine will be collected for analysis.
How to collect urine for analysis without a bag
If there are no urine collection bags available at the pharmacy, you can try other methods. They are more labor intensive, but they also allow you to collect the right amount of urine for analysis.
Doctors always ask for the first morning urine to be analyzed. In order not to oversleep the moment when the baby pees, wake him up 10-15 minutes earlier than usual. Then you will collect the urine quickly
The first method is suitable for boys. Remove your baby’s romper and diaper and breastfeed or water. Have a sterile test container close at hand. As soon as you feel that the child has begun to write, substitute the jar. Dip your penis fully into it so that no urine splashes out. You will have time to collect the required amount of material, usually 10 milligrams is enough for doctors.
Wash your baby thoroughly. Bacteria on the genitals can worsen test results
For girls, peeing in a jar is a difficult task. To collect urine from your newborn, prepare a deep, large bowl. Pour boiling water over it to get rid of bacteria that can distort the test result. Sit on the couch, put the baby to your chest, or give a bottle, and put the plate on your knees. Undress the girl from the bottom to the waist. As soon as she starts to write, put the plate under the legs. Then pour the urine into a sterile container.
