The approach to removing primer from glass depends on the type of primer itself. If the wallpaper can be washed off simply with a damp cloth or sponge, then you will have to tinker with adhesive or phenolic ones.
Special primer removers
The easiest way (but not always affordable) is to use special tools to remove the primer. They can be purchased at a hardware store or in the household chemicals department. Window panes are not sensitive to the type of solvent, so any means, both acidic and alkaline, will do.
Use the product as directed on the package. In most cases, they are sold as a concentrate, so the composition must first be diluted with water. Then, as a rule, apply with a brush or spray on the stain, leave for a few minutes, and then rinse.
Any work with concentrated special agents must be carried out with rubber gloves. If spray application is planned, a protective mask or respirator must also be worn.
Home methods for removing a primer from glass with improvised means
If the type of primer is unknown, then you can use two universal solvents – vinegar and soda. You should be careful – they should not get on the window frame, otherwise they can damage the plastic.
The algorithm for using vinegar is quite simple:
Undiluted white vinegar 6% or 9% is applied to the stain in a thin layer. Use a spray bottle or brush;
Leave for 10-15 minutes for the product to corrode the structure of the primer;
Wipe off with a damp sponge;
If necessary, repeat steps 1-3. When removing old stains, as a rule, you have to use several “approaches”.
Soda removal also does not require special techniques:
Moisten the stain through a spray bottle or just with a damp sponge;
Put some soda on it. You can dip a damp sponge first into it, and then lean it against the dirt several times;
Leave for 5-10 minutes for the product to corrode the structure of the primer;
Wipe off with a damp sponge. If necessary, repeat steps 1-3.
Protect your hands with rubber gloves when using these methods. Do not rub the glass with sharp objects as they may scratch the glass. If you want to scrape off the remnants of the stain, use soft stops, such as a bank card.
How to wash the primer under the wallpaper from the glass
Primer for wallpaper as an “active component” uses a regular paste. Therefore, to remove even an old stain, just water is enough. The procedure is as follows:
Apply water to the old stain. This can be done with a spray gun or simply put a damp cloth or rag on the traces of the primer;
Wait 5-15 minutes for the paste in the primer to swell;
Wipe off the stain with a damp sponge.
A fresh primer can be washed off without soaking the stain, just with a sufficiently damp sponge. Therefore, the right solution is to quickly clean immediately after the appearance of pollution, without waiting for them to dry.
How to clean acrylic primer from glass
Acrylic primer without the addition of dye is also easily washed off with water. To remove old and dried marks, you can use the previous instructions.
If the composition contains a dye, then you will need a White Spirit solvent:
Apply “White Spirit” to the stain using a brush, roller or sprayer;
Leave for 5-10 minutes;
Remove residues with a dry cloth or rag;
Wash the window as usual to get rid of solvent residue.
Work with “white spirit” should be carried out in a well-ventilated area. When using, protect your hands with gloves, and if you plan to apply by spray, wear a respirator.
How to clean adhesive primer from glass
To remove the adhesive primer, it is recommended to use universal solvent 646. It contains esters that destroy the structure of even dried spots of the material. The principle of operation is also simple:
Apply Thinner 646 to the stain using a brush or roller. The use of a sprayer is not recommended;
Leave for 5-10 minutes;
Using a soft scraper, pick up the edge of the primer and scrape off the stain. You can use a bank or discount card, a blade, a mounting knife, a scraper for a hob. Be very careful not to cut yourself or scratch the window;
Wash the window several times as usual.
Solvent 646 must not get on the metal-plastic frame. When scraping, the utmost care is taken. Work is recommended to be carried out in rubber gloves and a mask or respirator, as well as in a well-ventilated area.
How to clean phenol primer from glass
Phenolic primer is the most difficult to clean. Removing stains will require several “approaches”. In addition, it is necessary to use a solvent – xylene or solvent. A mixture of solvent with “White spirit” in a ratio of 1: 1 is also allowed.
You will also need to purchase an abrasive sponge. Preferably with fine grains. The procedure is as follows:
Solvent is applied to the stain. You can use a brush or roller. Atomizer – not allowed;
It is left for 2-5 minutes;
Then the stain is rubbed with an abrasive sponge;
Steps 1-3 are repeated until the stain disappears.
It is not recommended to press strongly with an abrasive sponge. This can damage the glass, leaving scratches on it. The final treatment can also be carried out with the hard side of a regular dishwashing sponge, it will help remove traces of the primer without abrasive action.
As in previous cases, work must be carried out in protective rubber gloves and in a well-ventilated area. If necessary, you can also wear a mask or respirator and goggles.
