🙂 Greetings to regular and new readers of the site! Time does not stand still: fashion and design of living quarters are changing. The curtains on the windows were replaced by blinds made of fabric, plastic, wood and metal. How to clean blinds? Let’s talk about this in the article.
Blinds are a sun protection system consisting of slats (slats) and a simple mechanism that helps to control the slats. Thanks to a simple device, it is possible to collect all the lamellas in whole or in part. And you can evenly distribute them over the entire window opening.
You can turn the flaps to any angle, and adjust the flow of bright rays as you like.
Types of blinds
- Horizontal (Venetian).
- Vertical.
- Roll.
- Pleated.
A bit of history
The word “blinds” is not inclined, translated from French means “jealousy”. It is believed that this is due to the East, where men protected their beloved women, covering the windows from prying eyes.
Often this simple word is pronounced incorrectly, emphasizing the first syllable – jAlusi. It will be correct – blind.
For the first time “mechanical curtains” appeared in 1760 in Philadelphia.
This fact is related to the English designer John Webster. Since 1841, American industrialist John Hampton patented the production of this device for windows.
Tips on how to care for your blinds
No matter what material the blinds are made of, they will collect dust. But not all blinds can be removed and washed. Cleaning is recommended to them. Moreover, it must be carried out regularly.
Dry Cleaning
Many types of slats made of jacquard, linen, cotton, fiberglass can only withstand dry cleaning. They will deteriorate from moisture. These miniature shutters must be cleaned to avoid excessive dust build-up.
The slats are cleaned on both sides with a vacuum cleaner with a special-purpose attachment. Once a week is enough for the textiles to last 2-3 years. After that, the sun protection devices will have to be changed.
If your curtains are made of wood, wax or polish can help complete the cleaning. This will create a thin film and make cleaning easier.
Steam cleaning
Such cleaning is possible with a steam cleaner, and is most suitable for plastic.
Steam is an excellent winner of nicotine deposits and kitchen contamination. You will have to walk through the most dirty places several times, and then wipe with a soft sponge. But, with such processing, it should be remembered that excessive efforts can damage the protective layer. When all the dirt has softened, it is enough to remove them with a soft cloth.
Wet cleaning
Such cleaning, in addition to plastic, can be easily sustained by wood and bamboo. In order for the cleansing to take place more efficiently, you need to add a non-abrasive detergent to the water and prepare a solution.
You can wipe the lamellas with a sponge and a napkin, at first wet, and then dry. It is convenient to use cotton gloves instead of a rag, and to remove dirt directly by hand.
Wash
Too dirty vinyl, aluminum, plastic curtains can be completely immersed in warm soapy water. At home, washing is most convenient in the bathroom.
Dissolve a simple detergent in water. For example, liquid soap or powder. Dishwashing detergent is also suitable. In this solution, lower the previously removed strips, and let them lie down for 10 minutes.
During this time, dirt and soot will “go away”, and you can start wiping and rinsing. It is not worth increasing the soaking time, so as not to damage the protective layer. In order for the lamellas to repel, and not attract dust, they can be treated with a dust-repellent agent.
How to clean vertical blinds
Easier to clean with a vacuum cleaner, brush or soft cloth. This is dry clean. Produced 1-2 times a month. Wet treatment 1-2 times every three months using detergents.
Vacuum the slats before washing. Then remove the blinds by disconnecting them from the metal structure. Roll each lamella, tie it up and place in a linen bag for machine washing. Delicate mode. After washing, fix the blinds at their “working” place, having completely assembled the structure.
How to clean horizontal blinds
Care is the same as for vertical ones. Wipe with a soft dry cloth (microfiber) or vacuum several times a month. Once a month, carry out wet cleaning of the lamellas. Do not forget to lubricate the metal parts of the mechanism.
Horizontal blinds can be washed without removing. Set the shade to “closed” mode by spraying the surface with a solution from a conventional spray. Solution:
- water – 5 parts;
- vinegar – 1 part;
- detergent – 1 part.
Wash with a sponge, soft cloth or hand-worn cloth glove. Many housewives use an old sock instead of a glove. Finish washing with clean water. Wipe dry.
The second option is to remove the blinds and place in a bath with detergent for 10 minutes. Wash with a soft brush or sponge. Rinse with running water. Let the water drain and dry the curtain. To reduce the degree of contamination of the curtains in the future, treat them with an antistatic agent.
