The most accessible and widely used nut in our country is the walnut. It’s great for snacking, baking, and cooking. You can cook a lot of everything from it, and we will show you how to choose it correctly.
For unpeeled walnuts:
- Choose nuts with whole shells, no cracks or holes;
- Take a nut in your hands – a fresh one will weigh more than an old one;
- Shake a nut – at a dried old nut you will hear a sound, like in a baby rattle, a good nut does not ring.
For shelled walnuts:
- Nuts should be light, smooth-skinned and firm to the touch;
- Fresh walnut has a delicate nutty smell, but the old one is pungent and very rich;
- A nut with an oily surface also indicates that it is old;
- Shriveled kernels indicate that the nut has shrunk from time and poor storage.
When choosing peeled nuts, keep in mind that you need to eat them quickly, otherwise they will become bitter and tasteless.
